U13 Div 1, Newport Town AFC A 2-1 Summerville Rovers

Monday, March 26 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorer: Conor Brett 2

Newport U13A’s earned their 4th league win in a row after a hardfought win over Summerville in Derryleigh on Monday evening.

After 1 game in the last 4 and a half months Newport were understandably rusty and had a poor start to the game. Mark Forde produced a superb save after 5 minutes from a free kick to keep the score at 0-0. However shortly afterwards Summerville took an early lead.

Conceding the early goal gave the Newport players a bit of a wake up call and performance began to improve. At the back Conor Jones, Jack Ryan, Ciaran Carey and Joey Lillis. In midfield David Healy and Aaron Coleman were begining to dominate while Sean Reddington and Conor Molamphy were working hard up and down the flanks. Conor Brett and Alex O’Toole were slowly begining to get more ball as Newport started to dominate midfield.

Newport started to create some half chances with Alex O’Toole having a couple of long range frees. Ciaran Carey had a long range lob drift just past the post and Conor Molamphy was unlucky with a shot from the left.

Newport finally got the break through before half time when Conor Molamphy headed the ball through for Conor Brett to lob past the goalkeeper. Newport stayed on the front foot but could not get the second goal before half time. Continue reading

U13 Div 1, Newport Town AFC A 3-1 Carew Park

U13A v Carew Park Feb 2 2018
Saturday, February 3 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Aaron Coleman, Conor Brett & O.G.

A full 3 months after their last game Newport U13a team got their season back up and running again with a hard fought 3-1 win against Carew Park. Starting the game level on points with Carew this was an important win and keeps up Newport’s good run of form.

After a long layoff it took a while for the game to get going. There were a few half chances early on. The best chance fell to Ryan O’Keefe who saw his shot saved by the Carew Park keeper.

Newport grew into the game as it the half developed. Jack Ryan and David Healy were dominating at the back and were well supported by Chris Egan and Conor Jones. Conor Brett and Aaron Coleman were winning the midfield battle with Conor Malamphy and Ciaran Carey making good ground on the wings. Ryan O’Keefe was playing well further up the field than usual in the number 10 position while man of the match Alex O’Toole lead the line very effectively and won the ball back high up the pitch on a number of occasions.

Newport took the lead towards the end of the first half when Aaron Coleman made a driving run into the box before been taken down to win a penalty. Aaron took the penalty himself and coolly finished into the corner. Newport were 1-0 up at half time.

U13 Div 3, Aisling Annacotty C 3-3 Newport Town AFC B

Saturday, February 3 2018 (Annacotty)

Scorers: Nathan Bridgeman 2 & David O’Brien

At long last we finally got to play a league fixture as we traveled to Annacotty to play Aisling on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning.
We started off very well with good possession & had the best of the chances to take the lead. Unfortunately Aisling broke down the right & took their 1st chance of the game to go 1 up. We came right back at them & with a super pass from David O’Brien he found Nathan Bridgeman who put away his chance to make it 1-1. Aisling took control of the last 10 minutes of the 1st half & their pressure told as they put away 2 more goals before halftime to make it 3-1.

We knew we didn’t deserve to be 2 goals behind & started the 2nd half in excellent form with Danny O’Keefe dominating midfield. The Aisling keeper made a poor clearance which David O’Brien picked up & shot from 20 yards out to find the back of the net. 3-2 & the momentum was definitely with us. With some lovely work down the right wing Conor O’Brien put a superb cross into the box which found Nathan Bridgeman who finished off what was the move of the game. 3-3 we knew we could finish off Aisling but chance after chance just kept missing the goal.

It finished 3-3 but this felt like a victory for us. Superb work from all the lads & hopefully the games will come fast and furious over the coming weeks.

Man of the match: David Whelton

Squad: Adam O’Connell, PJ Lenihan, Darragh Manning, Tommy Lyons, David Whelton, Robbie Murray, Mikey Carroll (c), Danny O’Keefe, David O’Brien, Brían Corrigan, Nathan Bridgeman, Luke Phelan, Ronan O’Connell, Conor O’Brien, Paddy Hussey
