U16 National Cup, 1st Round, Newport Town 2-1 Aisling Annacotty

Saturday, September 16 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Jack Foley & Jay Ryan

Massive well done to our U16 schoolboys who today secured an excellent 2-1 home victory over Aisling Annacotty A in the SFAI National Cup with goals from Jack Foley & Jay Ryan. A superb result given that we had four U15s in our side and were underdogs against a side that currently lead the LDSL Premier League. Newport took the lead through Jack Foley on 20 minutes and kept their noses in front until half-time.

In the second half Aisling exerted plenty of pressure, which paid off when they scored their equaliser. However the Newport lads, defying their underdog status, did not not let their heads drop and instead squeezed Aisling high up the park and their work-rate and effort was rewarded when Jay Ryan was on hand to tuck away a Jack Foley cross and put Newport back in front. The end to the game was nervy stuff with Aisling throwing the kitchen sink at Newport but the lads held firm and left nothing out on the pitch to ensure that we advanced to the next round of the competition, where they will welcome Holycross to Derryleigh Park in round 2.

Well done lads and best of luck in the next round.

U16 Premier, Corbally United A 5 – 2 Newport Town AFC

Wednesday, May 4 2016 (Athlunkard)

Newport scorer: Devlin Courtney (2)

An away trip to Corbally was on the menu for Wednesday evening, with the games rolling in thick and fast with injury casualties aplenty and illness playing havoc with our squad.

Newport started the game positively with few clear cut chances on either side, but it was Corbally who broke the deadlock in the 33 minute with a well taken goal giving them the lead at the interval. Some opportunist attacking straight after halftime doubled their lead with a third following soon after. Continue reading
