Sunday, May 20 2018 (U.L. Astro)

Scorers: Karl Kelly 2 & Jack O’Carroll

Congratulation to the U16 Schoolboys, under the management of Ray Ryan & Daire Kennedy, who secured the LDSL Div 1 League & Cup double after beating a gallant Aisling Annacotty B side 3-2 in the final in U.L.  Well done lads on a great achievement. A great way to end your time as schoolboy players before moving into the junior ranks. Click here for lots of images from the Cup Final.

The U16 Cup Final was contested between the winners and runners-up in the league and as expected was a tight affair. Annacotty started eagerly and got on the scoresheet early with 3 minutes gone. Annacotty seemed to have the impetus and were showing more desire and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead on the 20 minute mark from the penalty spot.

The second goal woke the Newport boys up and it was Karl Kelly who got Newport off the mark, rising highest to direct a corner past the keeper on 24 minutes. The Newport boys were still not performing at their best and were happy to hear the halftime whistle with the score at 1-2. Continue reading

U16 Div 1 Cup Semi-Final, Newport Town AFC 5-2 Ballynanty Rovers

Wednesday, May 9 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Jack Foley 2, Jay Ryan 2 & Joey Kelly

Those in attendance on Wednesday evening were in for a treat as Newport and Ballynanty contested a great game. Both teams were up for the game and the match started at a frenetic pace with both teams gunning for a place in the final.

It was Newport who struck first with Joey Kelly rising highest to meet Jack Foley’s corner and direct the ball over the Newport keeper.

Ballynanty got back into the game, the striker seizing on a fumbled ball to hold his nerve and pass the ball into the net from a tight angle.

Ballynanty had a foothold in the game and played some good football, and it was no surprise when they got on the scoresheet again. Two Newport clearances were blocked down before the ball ricocheted into the strikers path, and he duly struck low and to the keepers left, to give Ballynanty the lead.

Newport levelled the score a few minutes later, with Jack Foley scoring from the penalty spot after Karl Kelly was pulled down in the box. Continue reading

Friday, April 27 2018 (Dooradoyle)

Scorers: Jack Foley, Karl Kelly, Johnny Ryan & Haytam Kamil

The Newport boys arrived in a celebratory mood for their last league game with the league already wrapped up, but didn’t have things all their own way early on. Regional seemed intent on ruining a near perfect season and played the better football early on. After the 25 minute mark Newport got a foothold in the game and created a number of chances with Jack Foley and Jay Ryan coming closest.

Newport broke the deadlock on the 32nd minute when Jack Foley was released down the left wing into the box, where he shot low and past the keeper, into the far corner. From there Newport were the better team but failed to capitalise again in the 1st half. Continue reading

U16 Div 1 Cup Quarter-Final, Geraldines 0-7 Newport Town AFC

Tuesday, April 25 2018 (Garryowen)

Scorers: Jay Ryan 2, Jack Foley 2, Jack O’Carroll 2 & Johnny Ryan

Newport started brightest on a bright Wednesday evening and created early chances for Jack Foley and and Jay Ryan, but it was Jack O’Carroll who got Newport on the scoreboard after 10 minutes after winning, and converting a beautifully placed free kick out of reach of the keeper from 22 yards out.

Jack Foley converted at the back post after some neat play between Sean Freeney and Haytm Kamil down the right found him in the box with plenty of space, driving low and past the keeper. Newport dominated possession for the rest of the half before adding two quick goals just before the half. Jay Ryan headed home from Gavin Denihan cross from the left and Jack Foley shooting from outside the box to find the bottom corner again. Continue reading

U16 Div 1, Aisling Annacotty AFC B 1-5 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, April 7 2018 (Kilonan)

Scorers: Karl Kelly 4 & Jack O’Carroll

Newly crowned league champions Newport Town travelled to Aisling B looking to complete the season undefeated and got off to a great start when Sean Freeney and Jack O’Carroll combined to release Karl Kelly in the Aisling penalty area and some quick feet from Karl allowed him to avoid the attention of two defenders before slotting past the keeper.

At 15 minutes Karl Kelly once again deceived the Aisling defender to win a free kick at the edge of the penalty box and Kelly then headed home from the resultant cross by Jack O’Carroll.

The visitors made it 3-0 before half time, Dylan Ryan and Joey Kelly defending well with Joey releasing his brother Karl for his hat-trick. Continue reading

U16 Div 1, Newport Town AFC 4-3 Ballynanty Rovers

Monday, April 2 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorer: Jack O’Carroll 2, Karl Kelly & O.G

Ballynanty travelled to Newport on a wet bank holiday Monday and it was the away team that looked more lively from the start. Ballynanty had a few early chances with long range efforts on a skiddy surface and it was no surprise when Ballynanty went ahead with 15 minutes on the clock. A combination of poor defending and good play from Ballynanty.

Ballynanty remained on top for the rest of the half and doubled their lead when a cross from the right was contested by defense and attack with neither getting a touch. This was enough to distract Newport’s keeper and the ball skidded off the surface and into the Newport goals. Continue reading

U16 Div 1, Geraldines 2-9 Newport Town AFC

U16 v Geraldines march 24 2018
Saturday, March 24 2018 (Rathuard)

Scorers: Jack O’Carroll 3, Jay Ryan 2, Karl Kelly 2, Jack Foley & Johnny Ryan

Newport Town U16s travelled to Geraldines for a vital league clash on a glorious day. Both teams started well with Geraldines getting the better of the early clashes with only good defending from Sean O’Brien and Dylan Ryan keeping the home team at bay. Newport struck first against the run of play on 10 minutes with Sean O’ Brien and Jack Foley combining on the left to release Jack O’Carroll in the box. O’Carroll won a penalty after stepping across the defender and the same player slotted away the resulting penalty. The same trio combined again to win a corner a few moments later, and Jack O’Carroll headed from Jay Ryan’s corner to double Newport’s advantage.

Geraldine’s fought their way back into it on 20 minutes with a good strike from 20 yards beating Jack O’Sullivan in the Newport goals at the bottom right corner. Newport weren’t finished and Jack O’Carroll became creator this time, releasing Jack Foley who showed great composure in the box, and slotted past the keeper. Again, Newport midfield combined well, this time Sean Freeney the creator for Jack O’Carroll, who slotted low into the corner from 10 yards out to secure his hat-trick. But Geraldines weren’t deterred and won a penalty for a dubious handball late in the half, to pull the score back to 4-2. Newport weren’t happy to finish the half on that scoreline, and two goals late in the first half, from Jay Ryan and Johnny Ryan, effectively ended the tie before the half time whistle.
