Last Wednesday, ten of our schoolgirl players had the honour of representing Newport Town AFC at the FAI Soccer Sisters Festival in the Aviva Stadium. Newport Town AFC was one of the 8 clubs selected to participate due to the fact that our recent Easter Soccer Sisters Camp was the largest and most successful in the country. The road to the Aviva in May is now a well-worn path for the girls as this is the third year running that NTAFC has been one of the select few clubs to qualify for the event.
From the minute the players arrived at the Aviva they were treated like superstars. Irish international player, Rihanna Jarrett, chaperoned the girls for the day. She was very nice and got on great with the girls. The girls also had a Q&A session with Aine O’Gorman another international player.
The girls took them to do some drills and learned fancy skills from the experts. They were given tips on shooting and moved on to play two small sided games against Rush FC. Overall, the girls had a brilliant day. Sue Ronan (Head of Women’s Football in the FAI) and her team couldn’t have been nicer from start to finish. There were also two other teams from Tipp; our old friends Ballymackey and Killenaule. After a truly memorable day, the girls all went home with smiles on their faces.

NTAFC U12 Girls Green team completed a great day for the club last Saturday by winning the NTSFL U12 Cup Final, shortly after our U12 Red team had just won the Shield final. Killavilla were the league champions and were unbeaten all season which is a major achievement for any team. But this was a cup final and the Newport girls under the management of Robert Bailey and Micheal Lenihan went out to give it their all and they sure delivered on a 2-1 scoreline with a goal from Emily Hurley and an O.G. Newport went into the game feeling nervous but with a determination that we weren’t going to leave this match behind. From the start both teams battled fiercely, it took a moment of brilliance from Shauna Pearson to put Newport 1 up ,a run up along the right wing, shot from far out and the ball finished in the top left hand corner of the net, super stuff. Our backs Mollie & Eimear put in massive tackles, nothing was getting past them, and Robyn Moloney fought for possession bravely time after time. Our midfield of Eve, Robyn and Shauna played with great passing movements and runs. About 5 minutes from half time Lough Derg got a soft penalty for a handball in the box which they converted. 1 all at half time. This made the girls more determined for the 2nd half. Our 3 subs Muireann, Meabh and Eimear all played their part when called upon, well done girls. About 10 minutes into the half Shauna struck again with great link up play from Robyn; the girls were in top form now. 5 minutes later Robyn McNamara scored her own goal. At this stage we just closed the shop! Again our backs stood strong, now with had 3 at the back to finish it out. Special mention must go to Heather in goals who played brilliantly, one for the future. Overall a great win, with the girls putting in a massive work rate. The girls deserve the trophy after all their hard work during the year training in all weathers, they each have MASSIVE hearts. Thanks to each and every one of them for their hard work throughout the year. Also big congrats to our U12 counterparts on winning the cup, overall a great day for Newport Town AFC girls contingent.

NTAFC U12 Girls Green team completed the double on Sat in Glenabane, Holycross after our U12 Red team had just won the plate final. Killavilla were the league champions and were unbeaten all season which is a major achievement for any team. But this was a cup final and the Newport girls under the management of Robert Bailey and Micheal Lenihan were going out to give it their all. Newport went up 1-0 midway through the first half from a corner which deflected off of a Killavilla defender. Both sides had chances throughout the first half. Newport had a free kick on the edge of the box near the end of the half and Emily Hurley buried it in the top corner. Newport went in at half time up 2-0. Killavilla came out in the second half and put serious pressure on the Newport defence but our goalie Aoife Kennedy and our defenders Ameila Healy and Jane Hurley stood resolute while under siege from the Killavilla attack. Our midfielders of Eryn Kennedy, Sadbh Lenihan and Lauren Bailey ran and covered every inch of grass throughout the game. Our lone striker and goalscorer Emily Hurley held up the ball and made the Killavilla defence work hard, constantly reminding them of her threat if they pushed forward too much. Killavilla pressure eventually paid dividends with 10 mins to go when they scored. Newport absorbed the Killavilla pressure and defended the like women possessed. Eventually the final whistle was blown and the Newport girls were the NTSFL Cup champions 2017. They knew that they were the underdogs at the start and that Killavilla were league champions, but the effort that the players put in was rewarded. The Killavilla players were dissappointed at the end but they should hold their heads up high as very few teams in any sport go through a season unbeaten and have only one goal scored against them in the league. Their emotions shows how serious all these players take their sport and its a credit to the NTSFL for been at the forefront in the promotion of girls soccer.
