Last Wednesday, ten of our schoolgirl players had the honour of representing Newport Town AFC at the FAI Soccer Sisters Festival in the Aviva Stadium. Newport Town AFC was one of the 8 clubs selected to participate due to the fact that our recent Easter Soccer Sisters Camp was the largest and most successful in the country. The road to the Aviva in May is now a well-worn path for the girls as this is the third year running that NTAFC has been one of the select few clubs to qualify for the event.
From the minute the players arrived at the Aviva they were treated like superstars. Irish international player, Rihanna Jarrett, chaperoned the girls for the day. She was very nice and got on great with the girls. The girls also had a Q&A session with Aine O’Gorman another international player.
The girls took them to do some drills and learned fancy skills from the experts. They were given tips on shooting and moved on to play two small sided games against Rush FC. Overall, the girls had a brilliant day. Sue Ronan (Head of Women’s Football in the FAI) and her team couldn’t have been nicer from start to finish. There were also two other teams from Tipp; our old friends Ballymackey and Killenaule. After a truly memorable day, the girls all went home with smiles on their faces.
Travelling Squad: Emma Wright, Robyn Moloney, Amelia Healy, Robyn McNamara , Shauna Pearson, Eimear Ryan, Mollie O’Hora, Heather O’Neill, Eve Berry, Eimear Shanahan.

Wednesday, April 19 2017 (Shinrone)
Oh what a night! The culmination of a lot of hard work by all the girls, coaches and time given by the girls’ parents led us to winning the league on the final fixture of the season. With the only nerves on show coming from the coaches, the girls quickly settled into the game. Abbie added to her long list of assists with a perfect pass for Leah to open the scoring. Soon after, Eryn pounced on a loose ball for our 2nd. Again, the combination of Abbie and Leah led to number 3. With Aisling and then Paige holding midfield, it allowed the forwards to attack freely. With 20mins gone, Aoife split the defence and Shauna scored our 4th, and then Shauna made it 5 with a good solo run.
Our defensive line of Sarah, Mara, Mollie and Robyn were always alert and dealt with any attack from the Shinrone girls and would then quickly launch our next attack. And it was a counter attack that led to our 6th with Milla running strongly down the line, she cut in and shot, it was well saved but not held by the keeper and Milla reacted quickly to score from the loose ball. With seconds to go to half time, Aoife scored her own individual goal.

Newport scorer: Abbie Lenihan
We started the game brightly and the inter play between the girls was excellent to watch as they passed the ball around the field with confidence. From Emma’s distribution from goals to our backs, Sarah and Mara meant we quickly turned defence into attack. With Robyn in excellent form in the holding role, those opposition attacks were limited. With Eryn, Leah and Shauna going close to scoring, we could have been 3 up before a move started by Mara and finished in style by Abbie gave us a well-deserved lead. But with only seconds to go to half time, a lucky shot by BT drifted past our unsighted keeper.
In the 2nd half, BT started the brighter after their late equaliser but the girls responded with enthusiasm and again were unlucky not to take the lead with Aoife and Milla joining the attack. With the girls surging forward, we were caught on the break and BT scored what turned out to be the winner. With Aisling, Molly and Paige cheering on the girls, they gave their all and never gave up and on another night we could have been victors in this tense and thrilling game. Continue reading

Newport scorers: Leah Moran 2, Aoife Kennedy, Shauna Pearson & Aisling O’Gorman
What a great game of football was played in Derryleigh for this fixture by both sets of teams. Playing against a strong breeze in the 1st half meant that Eryn Kennedy did not get many chances up front or that Robyn McNamara, our covering midfielder, got into attacking positions but both girls covered a lot of the pitch with some selfless running.
The opener was created with some great running by Abbie Lenihan but finished in style by Leah Moran, who hit the ball on the half volley off the underside of the crossbar and went over the goal line. Soon after Aoife Kennedy split the defence with a sublime pass for Leah to score her 2nd. Our 3rd goal came just before half time when Milla Harte played in Aoife who slotted it past the keeper. Newport scorers: Eryn Kennedy 2, Leah Moran, Shauna Pearson & Milla Harte
The scoreline might suggest a one sided game but it was the girls’ team play that got that scoreline. From the start the girls passing was crisp and sharp with Robyn McNamara dictating play from the holding midfield role that she has made her own. Robyn sent Leah Moran through to slot it past the oncoming keeper. Our 2nd was an Abbie Lenihan powerful shot which was heading for goal but Eryn Kennedy made sure of it by guiding it into goals. Our 3rd was a mirror image of the 2nd as Abbie again shot as Eryn again deflected it into goals. With half time approaching, our midfield again cut through the Knigh defence for Shauna Pearson to score our 4th. Continue reading

Newport scorers: Shauna Pearson 5,Leah Moran 3, Eryn Kennedy 3 & Robyn McNamara
Shinrone were the visitors today and gave a spirited display but were no match for the Newport girls. From the start Abbie Lenihan tormented their backline but it was Leah Moran who scored first followed by a quick double by Eryn Kennedy. Leah got the next brace to complete her hat trick. Emma Wright and Aoife Kennedy took turns in goals and did not have a lot to do but Aoife pulled off a great save from a rare attack by Shinrone. Our usual defence were in attack mode, with Mara Van Aelst covering and Sarah Kelly and Molly O’Hora pushing forward. We welcomed Milla Hart back from injury and she covered the midfield area. Shauna Pearson added a brace before half time and then added to her total with a 2nd half hat-trick. On her first game for the club Paige Maher was very unlucky not to score on two occasions. Robyn McNamara, captain on the day, scored half way through the 2nd half. With time running out, Eryn scored our final goal to complete her hat-trick on the day. Hopefully Aisling O’Gorman our final injured player will be available for our next game.
Once again, thanks to all the parents for getting the girls to the game on an early Saturday morning, especially Trisha Kennedy and Hanna Van Aelst for dressing room duty.
