A bitterly cold morning in Roscrea set the scene for the Newport U15 girls fixture vs Killavilla. Coming to the business end of the league now and all teams are hungry for the points. This is very evident on the pitch with each encounter proving to be a bruising competitive battle.
The Newport girls had a slow start conceding 2 goals within the first 10 mins but the girls rallied and showed great character to compose themselves and tighten up their fight back. They created many chances but the Villa keeper was in inspired form denying at least 4 shots on target. Late in the half Abbie Lenihan found herself at the end of a brilliant cross by Leah Moran and buried the ball in the back of the net! HT Killavilla 2 – Newport 1. Continue reading

A cold, slightly breezy but blue skied morning was the setting for this Saturday’s much anticipated derby fixture between the Newport and Birdhill U15 girls.
Derby matches are always emotionally charged and this fixture was to be no different. The Newport squad had their work cut out for them facing this experienced Birdhill side.
The first half was an intense, even affair with Newport facing into the sun and still managing to put together some good football. The midfield and forwards in Ava Shinners, Skye Sheehy, Roisin Power, Abbie Lenihan, Sarah Finn and Kaitlyn Bradshaw worked hard from the start and showed great energy. They created a number of opportunities, but could not breach the strong defence of Birdhill. The backs with Rachel Carey, Eimear Carey, Kate Harvey, Amber Deegan and Keeper Emma Moloney kept a clean sheet in the first half with a very strong defensive effort of their own. HT 0-0.
The 2nd half started with the same intensity as the first, and by now the subs started to show their value. Carragh Flynn and Leah Moran worked hard up front, showing their strength with some great runs. About 10 minutes into the half, Abbie Lenihan broke through the Birdhill defence and made no mistakes in putting the ball in the back of the net. With their tails up after the goal, the Newport girls changed up a gear. Numerous attacks led to a few close calls with Roisin Power and Claire Kennedy being denied by the uprights. The backs bolstered by subs Leona Burke and Sarah Kelly ensured that very little passed the halfway line. The continuous pressure from Newport eventually saw some great inter play between Skye and Kaitlyn who supplied a beautiful through ball to Ava who buried it in the top corner. The defence held strong throughout the half and kept a clean sheet. FT Newport 2 – Birdhill 0.
A call out to Leah Guerin who turned out although she was injured and a speedy recovery to Rosie Quirke who could not make the match due to illness.
Squad: Ava Shinners, Skye Sheehy, Roisin Power, Abbie Lenihan (C), Sarah Finn, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Rachel Carey, Eimear Carey, Kate Harvey, Amber Deegan, Emma Moloney, Carragh Flynn, Leah Moran, Claire Kennedy, Leona Burke, Sarah Kelly and Leah Guerin.

Newport U15 girls travelled to Ballymackey on Saturday 16th December. The girls started well but went a goal down in the first half against the run of play. After regrouping at half time, the girls came out and played their way back into the match with great passing out of the backs to Roisin Power scoring making it 1-1. Newport were now well on top creating great chances with shots from Skye and Kaitlyn just wide of the post. Eimear Carey and Abbie were controlling midfield and pressure paid off when Newport were awarded a free kick and up stepped Rachel Carey with a great shot into the corner giving the Ballymackey keeper no chance to make it 2-1. With only one minute to go Ballymackey scored the equaliser hitting the bottom of the crossbar from a long range shot to share the points. The second half display was the best so far this year. All the squad played their part and had a great welcome for Caragh Flynn our latest signing.
Squad; Emma Moloney, Rachel Carey, Eimear Carey, Kate Harvey, Amber Deegan, Leona Bourke, Sarah Finn, Roisin Power, Abbie Lenihan, Ava Shinnors, Caragh Flynn, Kaitlyn Bradshaw Skye Sheehy, Leah Moran, Sarah Kelly and Leah Guerin.

The U15 girls travelled to Borrisokane on Saturday 2nd December. Borrisokane started very strong, but Emma Moloney was not going to be beaten on the day, and pulled off some early great saves to keep us in the game. Newport team stepped up their performance with the backs of Rachel, Eimear, Kate Leona and Amber taking control building from the back through the hard-working midfield of Sarah, Kaitlyn and Abbie. Ava, Skye and Rosin were a constant threat up front but the Borrisokane keeper was also having a good game. However, the pressure eventually paid off when the ball was worked through midfield by Abbie and Kaitlyn to Rosin who scored a great goal. 1-0 half time. Continue reading

Newport u15 girls hosted Knigh utd in our 3rd league fixture of the season on Saturday. Knigh have always proven to be a competitive outfit and this game was no different.
Newport conceded within the first 2 minutes and it was clear that this would be an uphill battle. The girls fought hard, but not much was going our way, conceding another 2 goals in the first half.
After a much needed half time break and a chance to regroup, the girls took to the pitch with a renewed sense of urgency. With most of the possession and some very positive attacking football, their hard work was rewarded with a well taken goal from Abbie Lenihan. Knigh retaliated with a 4th goal. On a day where we were denied goals by the crossbar, posts, side netting and an inspired performance by the Knigh keeper, the fight back was just a stretch too far. FT Newport 1- Knigh 4
Although the scoreline did not reflect the effort, there were some positives to take from this performance. When the chips were down, the girls showed great character to come out in the 2nd half with their heads high and a positive attitude. They delivered some very positives phases of attacking play and also displayed a much better defensive effort.
With many of our regular squad absent, we’d like to thank our u14 players for stepping up, their contribution was immense. We wish them all the best in their National Cup match on Sunday.
Squad: Emma Moloney, Rachel Carey, Leona Burke (C), Kate Harvey, Sarah Kelly, Amber Deegan, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Sarah Finn, Claire Kennedy, Roisin Power, Abbie Lenihan, Rosie Quirke, Aisling O Gorman, Mara van Aeslt
Our U15 girls travelled to Killenaule to take on Killenaule/Moyglass in the U16 National Cup. Despite a good start from the girls, Killenaule/Moyglass strength started to show as they took control of the game. Emma Maloney was having a great game in goals, pulling off some great saves, our back line was under pressure with 2 of the backs coming off with injuries before half time. Despite the differences in age and strength our girls never gave up and played some of their best football in the last quarter of the game. This pressure eventually paid off with Rachel Carey scoring from a free kick after the keeper was forced to handle the ball outside the box. We are very proud of all the girls who gave it everything under extremely tough conditions and managed to keep going right to the end. Now we know what the National Cup is all about we will be back again next year. I would like to thank Killenaule/Moyglass for the post-match refreshments and hospitality, they are a good side and we wish them the best of luck in next round of the National Cup. We would like to thank all the parents for travelling down, giving great support and encouraging the girls all the way.
Squad; Emma Maloney, Sarah Finn (Captain), Sarah Kelly, Leah Moran, Abbie Lenihan, Leona Bourke, Roisin Power, Kate Harvey, Rachel Carey, Skye Sheehy, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Rosie Quirke, Claire Kennedy, Leah Guerin and Jenny Keppel.
