Derryleigh Diary – October 15 2017

There were no junior games at the weekend as the only scheduled game, the U17 game away to Holycross was cancelled.

Well done to our U18 players, Devlin Courtney, Elliott Slattery & Troy Porter, who were called up for trials for the Limerick Oscar Traynor squad last Sunday in U.L.

This coming Sunday the A’s are home to Caherdavin (10.30am) and the B’s are away to Athlunkard Villa (2pm).

Our U14A’s were the only competitive side in action at the weekend, when they welcomed Lough Derg to Derryleigh Park in the second round of the National Cup. Unfortunately the lads lost 2-1 in a very tight and entertaining game with Aaron Coleman on the score-sheet for Newport. Lough Derg took the lead when a clearance from the goal line was picked up and finished to the corner of the net 1-0. Newport upped the pace and when a corner wasn’t cleared properly it was picked up by Aaron Coleman who drilled the ball to the bottom corner. 1-1 at half time. The second half was an even affair but Lough Derg took the lead half way through the second half and held on to the lead till the end.

The U16’s National Cup game at home to Holycross did not go ahead at a request from the visiting side.

Our two U10 sides were in non-competitive action away to Aisling Annacotty and Lisnagry. By all accounts, both games were very exciting and entertaining with some quality football on display from all the players. Once again, the non-competitive football games are all about player development and allowing the young players express themselves on the football pitch without being concerned about scorelines and league positions.

Next Saturday, our U15s travel to play Caherdavin in the National Cup (11am). Both our U13 sides are at home. The A’s play Parkville (11am) and the B’s play Regional (12.30pm). Both our U11 sides are away. The Greens play Carew Park (11am) and the Whites play Aisling Annacotty (2pm).

All match results, reports and upcoming fixtures can be viewed on the club’s website

Our U14’s were the only schoolgirl team in action and they advanced to the next stage of the National Cup following a comfortable 7-1 win at home to Cahir Park AFC. The girls also created a little footnote in the club’s history by being the first underage girls team to play in the National Cup. The girls rose to the occasion by producing an excellent team performance. With a strong wind behind them, the girls attacked from the off but Cahir caught them on the counter attack and scored against the run of play. The girls got straight back into the game when Leah Moran equalised with a fine solo run. Leah scored her 2nd, an exquisite lob over the keeper, in between goals by the Kennedy twins, Aoife and Eryn. In the 2nd half against the strong wind, the defensive line of Mara, Jayne, Mollie, Robyn, Katie and Nadine held strong while being marshalled by Emma in goals. With Sarah and Robyn holding midfield and Aisling making great runs down the wing, it allowed Shauna plenty of space through the middle. The result of which, Shauna added 2 more goals to our tally. Leah got her hat-trick when Shauna whipped in a corner and Leah proceeded to back heel the ball into the net. With the game over, both sets of teams and supporters headed back to the clubhouse for food and refreshments supplied by the parents and NTAFC Committee. A big thank you to all.

Next Saturday, the U13s are away Borrisokane (10am), while the U15s travel to play Birdhill (1pm).

Newport Nippers:

U8 games will now commence on Saturday, October 28 and U9’s on Saturday, November 4.

There was no winner of last week’s lotto. The lucky numbers were 4, 9, 17 & 30. This week’s jackpot is €2,000 and the draw will take place in McGrath’s Bar on Saturday night. Thanks as always to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.
