Scorers: Christy Doyle 7, Brian O’Sullivan & Nathan Hartigan
The Junior A side recorded a very comfortable 9-2 victory over Northside Legacy in the first round of the Lawson Cup, which was a nice warm-up ahead of the big game against Aisling Annacotty in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup next Sunday. The undoubted highlight of this game was a 7 goal salvo from in-form striker, Christy Doyle, who has now scored 27 goals in all competitions this season.
Newport, who trained hard over the Christmas period, hit the ground running and scored as early as the 5th minute, when Christy Doyle latched onto a lovely through-ball from captain, Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan. In the 11th minute, Doyler made it 2-0 when he latched onto a dropped ball by the Northside keeper from a cross Davy Ryan out on the left. It was all one-way traffic and Christy scored his first hat-trick on 25 minutes, when he again was on the end of a lovely slip-pass from Clemy to make it 3-0. Clemy & Doyler have struck up an excellent partnership this season and Clemy’s 14 goals, making a combined tally of 41, make them a handful for any side. Clemy made it 4-0 in the 29th minute he capitalised on a defensive error to shoot home off the post. 2 more goals from Christy before half-time, both headers, gave Newport a 6-0 lead at the interval.
Doyle continued where he left off after the break and scored his 6th & 7th goals in the 48th & 50th minutes respectively to make it 8-0 before he departed the field of play. With the job done and one eye firmly on next week’s game, manager, Marc Barry, made some substitutions to avoid the risk of injury to key players and also to give most of the panel a run-out. Substitute, Nathan Hartigan, made it 9-0 with 25 minutes remaining and amazingly Newport didn’t score again despite creating some good chances. Northside scored two consolation goals to leave the final score 9-2 to the home side.
Newport dominated the game from start to finish and advance to the next round where we are at home to Premier side Kilmallock. Another bonus was that we finished the game without any major injury scares ahead of next week. Full concentration can now switch to the massive challenge that lies ahead of us next week.
