U12, Premier, Mungret Regional 6 – 1 Newport Town AFC A

Monday, May 8 2017 (Mungret)

Newport scorer: Conor Brett

Newport U12’s started a very busy week with a tough away game against Mungret on Monday. Newport were missing 6 players due to other commitments and we were down to 9 players. The management and squad would like to give huge thanks to Evan Moran and James Anderson from the 11’s squad who stepped up to help us out.

Big thanks to Ryan Madden and Conor Jones for both stepping up and going in goals for a half each. Goalkeeper is the hardest position to fill and the two boys did a great job for us.

Newport had a very slow start to this game which is perhaps understandable given the number of changes needed. We were 5-0 down after 25 minutes. With 5 minutes left in the first half Conor Brett score a great individual goal beating 3 defenders before finishing to the net. Half time score was 5-1.

The team were disappointed in the first half and redoubled their efforts in the second half and vowed to give nothing easy to Mungret in the second half. The second half was an outstanding performance and Mungret were limited to 1 goal.

Great performances all over the pitch – particularly in the second half. David Healy and Jack Ryan were strong in the centre half positions with Jack make a superb clearance off the line in the second half. Joey Lillis and Ryan O’Keefe alternated between centre midfield and left back and both put in a big shift. Conor Jones and Ryan Madden played 1 half in Goals and 1 half at right back and their use of the ball going forward with goal kicks in particular was a real positive. James Anderson showed that he was up to the task at this level when he came on at right back. He made a few very important tackles and interceptions. Cillian English and Conor Molamphy played in the wide areas and got on the ball and linked up well with Conor up front. Conor Brett scored a fine goal and led the line well but was limited to a few half chances outside of that. Evan Moran was man of the match which is a great achievement for an 11’s player playing U12 Premier. He showed great composure on the ball and his movement caused Mungret problems whether he was up from or out wide.
