U13 Girls, Borrisokane 2-2 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, September 15 2018 (Borrisokane)

Scorers: Aoife Mellerick & Sinead O’Riordan

Our U13 girls played their first league game of the 2018-19 season today away to Borrisokane. Newport took the lead 1-0 halfway through the first half with a great run from midfield by Aoife Mellerick who took on 3 players before putting the ball past the keeper. Borrisokane came back fighting and after defending a corner from Newport they counter attacked and scored the equaliser. They quickly followed this up with a second and Newport went in 2-1 down at half time. Rob Bailey gave some words of advice at half time and Newport started the second half in control of the game and got a deserving equaliser early in the half. Unfortunately the game had to be stopped with about 10 mins to go due to an injury to one of the Borrisokane players. The referee made the right choice in stopping the game and both teams start the season with a point. Newport U13 girls would like to send best wishes to the injured player and we hope she recovers quickly. Our goalie for the match Cliodhna Lenihan played very well and pulled off one excellent save that showed her cat like skills. Our defence of Laura Parsons, Caoimhe Healy, Muireann Ryan and Joanna Van Aelst were resolute. Our midfield of Isabelle Ivers, Lucy Bailey, Aoife Mellerick, Eimear Ryan and Caoimhe Troy all played their part defending and attacking. Our forwards of Slaine Goodwin, Clodagh Healy and Sinead O Riordan gave the Borrisokane defence plenty of work to do.  A few of our players today were new and this was their first ever soccer match although you wouldn’t have known that if you were watching the game as all the girls played very well. Training continues on Wed night at 7pm sharp.
