Scorers: Eoin McLoughlin 2 & Jay Ryan
On a beautiful, warm summers evening Newport travelled in to the “Boro” for their last league game of the season. Newport had played Jansboro twice already and had lost by 1-0 in the league and just 2-1 in the Cup and knew that they were as good as Janseboro and that they could have got better results in each of the previous matches. So, there was huge determination from the Newport Lads to show that they were well capable of beating their near rivals.
What followed was as good a game of soccer as you would see at Schoolboys level between two very evenly matched teams.
Newport started full of intent and running and took control of proceedings early on – they had a couple of chances just cleared by the Janseboro defence before the deadlock was broken with a super Eoin McLoughlin strike off his supposedly weaker right foot! Newport were 1-0 and flying. They remained on top for the rest of the half and Janesboro never really looked like grabbing an equaliser as the half progressed.
In the second half Newport conceded a sloppy goal to allow Janesboro back into the game – the boys knew this was against the run of play and sought to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. Their efforts were rewarded when Eoin McLoughlin added his and Newport’s second with a tidy finish from a Jay Ryan rebounded shot – 2-1 to Newport.
The game was now really in the melting pot and became even more so when Janesboro managed to equalise for the second time with a headed goal from a late corner – a real sucker punch for the Newport Boys – 2-2 with time running out.
However, Newport pulled it out of the fire when they deservedly scored a dramatic late winner when Jay Ryan lobbed the goalie from the edge of the square – 3-2 to Newport!!
The ref blew up in the next couple of mins and Newport secured a brilliant 3-2 Victory after an epic contest
