U15 Premier, Newport Town AFC A 4-2 Regional United A

Newport Town AFC & Regional Utd Showing Racism the Red Card

Saturday, October 7 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Eoin McLoughlin, Johnny Ryan, Jay Ryan & Calum Grant

On a day when the anti-Racism message was being promoted by the League the Newport U15a team welcomed Regional United to Derryleigh on a pleasant Saturday morning.

The Newport boys had 2 wins from 4 under their belt and needed to secure victory on their home turf to ensure they maintained their position in the top half of the Premier League.

Newport started strongly and were the better team in the opening 10 mins but with very few clear-cut chances being created. This was rectified on 15 mins when a lovely Calum Grant lobbed shot went over the goalie’s head to make it 1-0 to the home team – a very well taken goal. Newport now began to assert their authority more and you could sense that there were more goals to be had – and we didn’t have to wait long. Eoin McLoughlin rose highest to head a great goal from a crossed ball – brilliant to see some of Coach Seamus’s training ground work pay off in a match situation! Newport held their lead to come in at half time with the score at 2 nil – a well-deserved lead.

Regional had a few threats at the Newport goal and the crucial third goal was going to be needed before the home team could relax. 2 mins after the restart provided that third goal when Johnny Ryan reacted quickest to a rebounded shot off the goalie to score a real poachers goal to put clear daylight between the 2 teams. Due to injuries / tiredness Newport made a few changes as they wanted to give all the 16-strong panel some game time. Regional then scored with a great strike out of nothing to give them a glimmer of hope in the match and that glimmer got brighter when they scored a second with 10 mins left in the game to leave the match at 3-2 to the home team. The experienced Newport boys did not panic and they reasserted their authority within mins when Jay Ryan finished to the net to put 2 goals between the teams again. The game wound down in the final few mins and the Newport boys were happy to secure a good home victory with a 4-2 win.

This was Newport’s 3 victory in 5 matches and they now sit in 3rd place in the Premier League table – the task now is to keep building on this good start to the season –Well done boys!
