Scorer: Jack O’Carroll
Unfortunately, despite a very good performance against Aisling Annacotty on Sunday afternoon, the U18s bowed out of the FAI National Cup on a 3-1 scoreline. The game was much closer than the scoreline suggests as this was a game where we matched the current Premier League leaders in overall play and if we had been a bit more clinical in front of goal and showed a bit more composure at times, we could have caused an upset. Aisling opened the scoring somewhat against the run of play in the 30th minute and brought this lead into the half-time break. Early in the second-half Newport had a great chance but unfortunately Colin Coleman’s shot was saved by the keeper. Newport lost concentration for a 15 minute period mid-way through the second half and this proved to be our downfall. Goals in the 62nd & 70th minutes extended Aisling’s lead to 3-0 and gave the lads a mountain to climb. However great credit is due to the players for not rolling over and Jack O’Carroll rifled home in the 80th minute after some good work by Jack Noble on the right-hand side to deliver a good ball into the danger area. Unfortunately the lads couldn’t score a second, which may have caused some panic amongst the visitors and it’s Aisling who are through to the next round. Despite the result, the performance will give the lads great confidence for the remainder of the league campaign.
