U18, Ger Ryan Youth Cup, Newport Town AFC 4-1 Shelbourne

Sunday, January 6 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Devon Ryan, Karl Kelly, Jack Foley & Jack O’Carroll.

The U18s hadn’t played a competitive game in almost 2 months, since November 11, but they got rid of their rustiness shown in the early stages to secure sage passage to the next round of the Ger Ryan Youth Cup with a well-deserved 4-1 win at home to Shelbourne on Sunday afternoon. The lads will know that the first-half performance was sluggish but still commanded a 2-1 at half-time thanks to the opener from Devon Ryan in the 24th minute and a 30 yard shot from Karl Kely in the 40th minute. A much-improved performance in the sceond half saw Newport score another 2 goals through the hard-working Jacks (Foley & O’Carroll). This was a great result for the lads as it’s hard to keep the interest-levels up, when only playing 2 games in 3 months. However the numbers attending and the effort being put-in at training will hopefully be all worth it at the business end of the season.
