Newport scorers: Brian O’Sullivan (2) & Dean Lenihan
Newport A’s recorded a good 3-1 away victory to Corbally Utd and in the process moved into second place in Div 1A, 5 points behind current league leaders Nenagh.
Newport took control of the game from the kick off and looked comfortable on the ball and in attack. Newport took the lead on 20 minutes, when Dean Lenihan, superbly lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box. Newport were dominating possession but it was another 20 minutes before, Brian ‘Clemy’O’Sullivan doubled the lead with a nice low shot, which gave the keeper no chance just inside the post. 2-0 at half time.
4 minutes into the second half, Clemy scored his second after his partner-in-crime, Dean Lenihan, laid off an inch-perfect pass and no better man than the captain, to finish the chance.
With a 3-0 lead, Newport appeared to take the foot off the pedal, which allowed Corbally back into the game and when they scored in the 60th minute, there were thoughts of the possibility of another high-scoring game a la Charleville & Kilmallock. However this time, the ship was steadied and there were no further goals from either side before referee Donal Power blew up on 90 minutes in the fading light.
Next up for Newport is a home game to Ballynanty ‘B’ on Sunday morning.
