LDL Div 3A, Newport Town AFC 4 – 3 Ballylanders (Dave Murray (2), Dermot Ryan & Steven O’Connor)

Sunday, January 25, Derryleigh Park

The Mighty Bs - 25 Jan 2015
Newport entertained Ballylanders in Div 3A of the Limerick District League and ran out worthy 4-3 winners to overtake the visitors in the league table. With a large squad to pick from, the management team of Ailbe Coffey & Mark Barry have some headaches when selecting their starting 11. The B team have some seasoned campaigners in their ranks who have served Newport well down through the years but the it was a young team that started the game for Newport, although Eoin Bonfield, at centre half, did slightly distort the average age. However, in fairness to ‘Bonzo’ he continues to roll back the years and gave another masterful performance at the heart of the home defence. Sometimes you just can’t beat experience.

Newport went a goal down early into the game after a long range speculative shot took a wicked bounce off the surface and beat Mark Shinnors in the Newport goal. However Newport teams don’t give in too easily and not long after, Dermot ‘Dodo’ Ryan scored a Beckhamesque free kick from long range to level the scores. Dave Murray, fresh from his introduction as a sub in the morning’s A game, rose highest from a corner to powerfully header home to give Newport a 2-1 half time lead. The normally ‘quiet’ Dave, who usually doesn’t have much to say, has certainly has made an impact on his return from down under. Continue reading

In a local derby, nothing could separate Newport and Murroe and the honours were shared, with both teams taking a point from the game. However Newport could have snuck it at the death when J C Ahern’s shot came off the post but in fairness, Murroe also had chances so a draw was a fair result.

The draw keeps Newport in the top half of the table. Best on the day for Newport were Kalem Harte and the recently returned, Dave Murray. Continue reading
