U17, Div 2, Charleville 4-2 Newport Town AFC

Sunday, August 20 2017 (Charleville)

Scorers: Jack Noble & Devon Ryan

Minus a couple of players, Newport travelled to Charleville for their secondleague fixture of the season, in what was always going to be a tough game as the home team had won the County League last season. Despite the heavy rain overnight and the morning, the pitchwas in absolutely immaculate condition, which invoted both teams to play the ball on the deck.

The first 15 minutes was an even contest with both sides probing. However it was Charleville who broke the deadlock in the 18th minute and they then doubled their lead in the 30th minute. This Newport team is a brand new side and the players are only getting used to playing with one another but they worked a lovely free kick in the 37th minute when Colin Coleman took a quick free kick in the middle of the park and passed to left full-back, Brendan McMahon who had overlapped on the wing and his pin-point cross was bravely headed to the net by Jack Noble under fierce pressure from the big keeper. 2-1 at half-time and Newport were right back in the game. U17, Div 2, Newport Town AFC 4 – 3 Kilfrush

Wednesday, August 16 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Devon Ryan (3) & Ciaran Flynn

Newport U17’s got their league campaign off to a good start with a 4-3 win at home to Kilfrush. However it was a real get out of jail game as despite leading 4-0 at half-time, the concession of 3 second half goals led to a very nervy & exciting finish and it needed a penalty save late-on from the Newport keeper, Josh White, to ensure that the home side collected all 3 points on offer.

This is a brand new side with a lot of new players making their competitive debut for the club. However it took just 50 seconds of the new season for them to combine well to open the scoring. Devon Ryan timed his run perfectly to latch on to a super diagonal ball from Jack Noble and coolly lobbed the keeper to make it 1-0. Devon then scored his second in the 26th minute and at this stage Newport had settled well into the game and all the debutants were playing their part. In the 32nd minute, another new signing, Ciaran Flynn, let fly from 30 yards out and his shot was rifled to the top tight corner, giving the keeper no chance. Devon Ryan then was on hand to round off his first half hat-trick and a very good debut, when he got on the end of a low drilled cross from the left by the impressive Jack Foley. 4-0 at half time. U17 Div 2, Cup Final, Newport Town AFC 1 – 4 Mungret Regional

U17 Cup Final Montage
Tuesday, April 25 2017 (Jackman Park)

Newport scorer: Odhran Brett

The U17s suffered cup final heartbreak losing to Mungret Regional on a 4-1 scoreline. Two goals conceded in the first 5 minutes proved too big a mountain to climb against a very good Mungret side. A lot of teams would have buckled at this stage but great credit is due to the lads for battling back into the game and leaving nothing outside on the pitch. In the second half, Newport were really chasing the game but two counter-attack goals, either side of an Odhran Brett goal for Newport, saw the trophy go to Mungret. The Newport 17’s are a hard-working and honest side who play for one another and for certain a lot of the players will get to play more Cup Finals in Jackman Park and will have a learnt from the experience. They have two league games remaining and intend to finish the season strongly and hopefully secure a top two finish. Despite the disappointment, the players & management would like to express their great appreciation for the fantastic support that they received from the large Newport crowd in Jackman Park.

Match squad: Brendan Coffey, James Lynch, Jack Noble, Elliot Slattery, Ben Wixted, Odhran Brett, Jack Connolly, Jordan Mooney,  Devlin Courtney. Adam Hurley, Philly Deegan, James Rochford, Killian O’Malley, Jack Landers, Cian O’Connell

Unavailable due to injury: Nathan Hartigan, Pat Murtagh & Darren Collins

U17, Div 2 Cup Final, NTAFC v Mungret Regional

U17 Cup Final FBAll roads lead to Jackman Park on Tuesday evening for the U17 Div 2 Cup Final between Newport Town AFC & Mungret Regional. This group of players have worked really hard this season and fully deserve their place in the final. Some have been with the club since they were 5/6 years of age and this will be their first Cup Final. So if you can, please try to get to the game to support the lads. This should be a good game as the two sides currently lie first and second in the league and the games between them this season have been very close with Mungret prevailing on 3-2 and 2-1 scorelines. Kick off in Jackman is at 7pm.

U17 Div 2, Newport Town AFC 2 – 1 Janesboro

Tuesday, April 18 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorer: Elliott Slattery (2)

Two superbly struck free-kicks from centre-half, Elliott Slattery, including one in the very last minute was the difference between these two sides. The win keeps Newport in second place, 5 points behind Mungret Regional, with two games remaining. This was a tight game and we rode our luck at times with the woodwork keeping Janesboro out twice and a world-class reflex save from Brendan Coffey denying them on another occasion. However we also had some great chances to make things a little easier.

This was a good solid game for the lads ahead of the big cup final next Tuesday. Importantly we didn’t pick up any more injuries. All roads lead to Jackman Park next week.

Match squad: Brendan Coffey, Robert Duggan, Jack Noble, Elliot Slattery, Ben Wixted, Odhran Brett, James Lynch Jack Connolly, Adam Hurley, James Rochford, Killian O’Malley, Jordan Mooney, Jack Landers, Cian O’Connell & Philly Deegan

U17 Div 2 Cup Semi-Final, Knockainey 1 – 3 Newport Town AFC

U17 v Knockainey Cup Semi April 15 2017
Saturday, April 15 2017 (Knockainey)

Newport scorers: Elliott Slattery 2 & Jordan Mooney

Pride of place goes to the U17s who have made it through to the Div 2 Cup Final in Jackman Park on April 25, following a gritty 3-1 win away to Knockainey on Saturday evening with goals from Elliott Slattery (2) and Jordan Mooney. Newport were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to a long-range free kick and penalty from Elliott Slattery. The game was made safe in the 78th minute when Jordan Mooney was on hand to tap-in after Odhran Brett’s effort was only parried by the keeper. Knockainey scored a late consolation but it’s Newport who will now take on Mungret Regional in the final, which will take place in Jackman Park on Tuesday, April 25 at 7pm.

Match squad: Brendan Coffey, Robert Duggan, Jack Noble, Elliot Slattery, Ben Wixted, Odhran Brett, James Lynch Jack Connolly, Adam Hurley, James Rochford, Killian O’Malley, Jordan Mooney, Jack Landers, Cian O’Connell & Philly Deegan
