U18, Div 2, Charleville 2-3 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, September 2 2017 (Charleville)

Scorers: Devlin Courtney 2 & Darren Hanley

The Youth team travelled to Charleville last Saturday evening for their latest league game. Conditions were tough to say the least with wind and rain arriving prior to kick off. Newport were under pressure early on but kept a spirited Charleville at bay. After 20 minutes Newport settled and started to play some good football. Newport scored their first goal on 30 minutes after Darragh Hanley collected a ball out from defence, turned and played a super ball in over the top for Devlin Courtney who showed a great turn of pace to pull away from 3 defenders to slot past the on rushing keeper. Three minutes later Newport were 2 up after some ping pong in the Charleville box, the ball came out to Devlin who connected with a first time volley, sent the ball through a crowd of bodies and into the back of the net. Troy Porter was unlucky not to score as great pressure from our forward pair caused a mistake in the Charleville defence, his shot going narrowly wide.

Newport got their third a minute before half time as Darragh lobbed the keeper with a superbly taken shot. Charleville made a number of substitutions at half time and were a much tougher opposition in the second half. In worsening conditions Charleville scored on 60 minutes and again on 78 minutes to leave the game on a knife edge. But through great determination and team work the lads held out for a victory. Next game away to Knockainey this Wednesday the 6th at 6.30.

U18, Div 2, Newport Town AFC 8 – 1 Regional Utd B

Tuesday, August 23 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Elliott Slattery 3, Troy Porter 3, James Rochford & Devlin Courtney

The Youths continued the good start to the season with a win against Regional B in Derryleigh last Tuesday evening. The lads were quickly off the mark with Elliott Slattery climbing highest to connect with a James Lynch corner for 1-nil on the sixth minute. Elliott had his second 3 minutes later with another header again from a James Lynch cross. Next on the scoresheet was Troy Porter (30min) his deft touch taking him away from 2 defenders and an unstoppable shot giving the keeper no chance. Elliott had his hat trick on 38mins after Jordan Mooney was taken down in the box after a surging run. Troy had his second on 41mins finishing well when the ball came to him from a free kick floated over the defence. The scoring continued into the second half with James Rochford continuing his fine scoring run with a neat finish from 12 yards. Regional pulled 1 back on 60 mins against the run of play. Newport had their second hat trick hero on 71mins as Troy pounced on a through ball from Jack Connolly. The lads showed no sign of letting up with Devlin Courtney scoring their eighth goal on 81mins. Next game Tuesday 29th away to Shelbourne.

U18, Div 2, Aisling Annacotty B 1 – 8 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, August 19 2017 (Killonan)

Scorers: James Rochford 2, Troy Porter 2, Adam Hurley, Colin Coleman, Devlin Courtney & Darragh Hanley)

The Youths made the short trip to Aisling Annacotty B for their second league fixture of the season. Newport set the pace early and were a goal to the good after 5 minutes, James Rochford latching onto a through ball. Devlin Courtney was next to get in on the action (30 min) connecting with a cross from the left. Four minutes later Adam Hurley reacted quickest in the box to tap home. James Rochford (38 min) was back at it again lobbing the keeper from a tight angle. Troy Porter was next to score (41min) rifling a shot past the keeper. Newport took their foot off the gas at the start of the second half, which allowed Aisling to pull one back, which was as good as it got for the hosts as Newport increased the pressure once again. James Rochford being denied his hat-trick by the crossbar first and then the post! Troy got his second of the night racing onto a long ball in over the defence. Substitutes Colin Coleman and new signing Darragh Hanley both scored late on to round off a great team performance. Next game Tuesday 22nd in Derryleigh v Regional B.

U18, Div 2, Newport Town AFC 2 – 2 Kilmallock

Tuesday, August 16 2017 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorer: Elliott Slattery (2)

The Youth team kicked off their league campaign on Tuesday evening with a tricky home game against a big, physical Kilmallock side. After a slow start the lads began to find their rhythm and were rewarded with a penalty on 20mins after Devlin Courtney was brought down in the area. The penalty was coolly dispatched by Elliott Slattery. Two quick goals just before half time saw the lads go in at the break 2-1 down. Newport started the second half at a blistering pace and was awarded a second penalty on 59 minutes after new signing Denis O’Donoghue was taken down in the box. Once again Elliott stepped up and slotted low into the corner. Newport pressed hard for the winner, but unfortunately were unable to get the elusive third. Next game this Saturday v Aisling Annacotty B.
