U18 Munster Youth Cup, Newport Town AFC 2 – 3 Mungret Regional

U18 v Mungret Regional Dec 11 2016
Sunday, December 11 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorers: Devlin Courtney & Adam Keane

Our U18s bowed out of the Munster Youths Cup when they lost out 3-2 at home to Premier League outfit Mungret Regional. Despite a battling performance, the lads were behind from the very first minute after conceding a very early goal and then fell 2-0 behind in the 14th minute. We then had a chance to pull one back from the penalty spot in the 16th minute but the Mungret keeper pulled off a good save to deny us. Newport did close the gap in the 27th minute when Devlin Courtney scored. The second half was a very close game but Newport went down 3-1 down in the 80th minute. Adam Keane scored to pull one back in the 83rd minute. Unfortunately despite a couple of close chances, Newport could not score the equaliser to take the game into extra time, losing the game 2-3.

U18, Div 2, Newport Town AFC 0 – 5 Charleville

Sunday, November 6 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Today was Newport U18’s first game for several weeks and saw them take the field in Derryleigh Park against Charleville FC. If Newport had won this game they could have gone top but it wasn’t to be with Charleville scoring after 7 mins from a corner.

Newport struggled to get their usual game going and found the break over the last few weeks hard to get back to the high tempo game they had adopted. By half time Newport were down by that single goal without really playing. They took the field in the second half but found themselves 2 down after conceding a penalty. Newport made several changes trying to come back into the game but gave away two more penalties to go 4 down. This wasn’t the end of the scoring with Charleville pressing looking for a fifth and were rewarded with 15 minutes to go and finishing the game with a 5 nil win. This was just not Newport’s day but they will bounce back from this and no doubt use the hurt of this game as motivation for their next match.

U18, Munster Youth Cup, Newport Town AFC 3 – 2 Geraldines (AET)

U18 v Geraldines Oct 9 2016
Sunday, October 9 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorers: Elliott Slattery, Jack Noble & Nathan Hartigan

Newport started this Munster Youths Cup contest very well creating some chances early on. However on 7 minutes, Geraldines, who had very little attempts on goal capitalised on the back of some errors to take the lead. Newport continued to knock the ball around with Nathan Hartigan and Mike Ryan driving them forward. On 12 minutes a shot hit high into the box in hope lobbed Sean O’ Dwyer in the Newport goal and gave Geraldines a two goal head start.

The game was starting to be dominated by Newport who built from the back with Ciaran Braddick powering forward at every opportunity and crossing into the box for Adam Keane and Darren Collins who went close on a few occasions. Elliott Slattery contained to dominate at the back releasing Jay Madden down the right who added square for Nathan Hartigan who shot just over the bar as the ref blew for half time.

With Newport making two subs Aaron O’ Neill and Conor Nolan coming on, the second half started at a faster pace and Newport continued to dominate. With the subs making an immediate impact it wasn’t going to be long before Newport would get on the score sheet. A break on the right by James Lynch won Newport a corner which Nathan Hartigan delivered with pin point accuracy onto the head of Elliott Slattery who leapt like a salmon above everyone else in the box to give Newport their first goal. Newport U18’s travelled to Kilmallock and came away comfortable 6- 2 winners.

U18, Div 2, Newport Town AFC 2 – 2 Geraldines

Saturday, August 27 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorers: Elliott Slattery (2)

Newport’s third game saw them at home to Geraldine’s who they hadn’t played in a few years. Newport went into this game with a few people missing due to other commitments. Newport were without 4 players but were keen to show the strength and depth in their squad.

Newport went behind early with Geraldine’s using their size to advantage and out muscling Newport in all areas of the pitch. It was one nil to Geraldine’s at half time before Newport conceded a second goal and looked as if they were down and out.

Newport gritted their teeth and dug deep when they started to come out on top in their individual battles. From a free kick just inside the Geraldine’s half Elliott Slattery powered a shot across the slippery surface that went low into the bottom right hand corner and pulled Newport back to within one goal.

With twenty minutes to go it was all Newport and Geraldine’s were camped in their own half when Adam Keane broke into the box and was taken down by the keeper who amazingly didn’t receive a red card. Elliott Slattery stepped up and slotted it home to give Newport a well-deserved draw. It stayed this way and Newport banished the loss of Kilfrush from the previous weekend.

Squad: Sean O’ Dwyer, Jay Madden, Aidan Healey. Elliott Slattery, Odhran Brett, James Lynch, Nathan Hartigan, Cian Power, Guarantee Braddick, Darren Collins and Jordan Mooney, Jack Noble, Brendan Coffey, James Rochford, Adam Keane and Sean Carroll.
