Saturday, March 10 2018 (Annacotty)

Scorers: Conor Molamphy 4 & James Moloney

A mild and misty morning found Newport U12A facing Annacotty U12B away in Newtown Park. This was an important fixture for Newport with only a few points separating vital spaces in the league. Accordingly, there was a very frantic start to the game with both teams endeavouring to get the best start possible. With a strong breeze assisting Annacotty, the first ten minutes saw them have a better introduction to the game. Just on the ten-minute mark, Luke Kennedy in goals was called on to make a fine one handed save touching the ball narrowly over the bar.

It was a route one endeavour which was to provide the opening score for Newport. From Luke Kennedys excellent kickout and a deft flick from Ciaran Carey saw the onrushing James Maloney drive forward fending off the Annacotty Centre half and finding the net. Newport were one up after 15 minutes.

Newport always slow to start, now began to settle and with players in midfield Ciaran Carey, Daithi Welton and Aaron Joyce coming into the game, Newport looked like a team on a mission. Ciaran Carey moved out of the centre of midfield across the line and picking up a great ball from Daithi Welton he drove down the side sending a low cross into the Annacotty penalty box. Conor Molamphy had occupied prime real estate in the box, controlled and slid the ball home … Newport were two up after 18 minutes.

Annacotty at home were not going to throw the towel in by any means. Annacotty came searching for a score and having been thwarted to date by a solid back three of Damien O Brien, Darragh Meaney and James Anderson, it was Annacotty who were now pressing. A goal line sliding clearance by Damien O Brien, past an outstretched Luke Kennedy was to keep Newport’s clean sheet intact.

James Moloney and Conor Molamphy up top, were now getting more chances as Newport began to get a hold on midfield. Newport once again were to stretch out the lead before halftime. A cross from Daithi Welton this time was cleared by the Annacotty defence only to find Conor Molamphy. Conor took the ball on first time across his body and chipped the keeper from 25 yards. It was a superb strike.

Half Time Newport 3 – 0 Annacotty.
