U16 Premier, Newport Town AFC 0 – 1 Corbally United A

Saturday, April 9 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

A 2pm kick off on a bright sunny Saturday afternoon saw the visit of Corbally to Derryleigh.

The first half was a competively fought contest with Newport coming out well on top in the possession percentages and also the opportunity stakes with Devlin Courtney and Nathan Hartigan going close on a couple of occasions.

Newport were in fine form, with their work rate in possession and especially without the ball outstanding. Quick thinking and passing was the tale of the first half for Newport and were unlucky not to be leading at the break. Continue reading

U16 Premier, Newport Town AFC 6 – 1 Coonagh

Saturday, January 23 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorers: Nathan Hartigan (3), Odhran Brett, James Lynch & O.G.

U16 v Coonagh Jan 23 2016

Under 16s v Coonagh

A wind swept Derryleigh Park saw our U16’s play host to Coonagh, in the Premier League in their first game since October 31. A near full squad of 16 players all played their part in a 6-1 home win for the lads which may turn out to be an important win come the end of season.

Newport scored early to calm the nerves with a very well struck free kick from all of 30yrds from Nathan Hartigan and was quickly followed up with his second from a cross by Jack Noble.

3-0 soon followed from centre-half, Odhran Brett, who was first off the mark to follow up on a rebound from a fiercely struck shot from Jack Williams who was a menace to Coonagh up front all afternoon.

Industrious as always, our two wingers Colin Coleman and James Lynch combined to make it 4-0 with the latter sealing the deal. Nathan completed his hat-trick from the spot, followed by a Coonagh OG, who scored from the spot themselves late on to put a blemish on what was a very good defensive display by Newport.

Due to a recent unforeseen circumstance, which some in inner circles have dubbed “Curtain Gate”; we were left without our usual keeper Mr Brendan Coffey, but fair play to Elliott Slattery who took on the task admirably. Get well soon No.1. We hope to see a full squad at training on Monday night 7.30 – 9pm.

Squad: Elliott Slattery (C), Robert Duggan, Adam Hurley, Odhran Brett, Jack Noble, James Lynch, Devlin Courtney, Jordan Mooney, Colin Coleman, Jack Williams, Nathan Hartigan, Killian O’Malley, Cian O’Connell, Jack Landers, Chris Carmody & Jamie Mulcahy.

Under 15 LDSL Schoolboy Squad

Congratulations to our schoolboy player, Jack Noble, who after recent trial games, has been selected for the Limerick District League under 15 squad for the 2016 Inter League competition.

The Limerick District League will take on teams from the Waterford, West Cork & Limerick Desmond Leagues in the pool stages early in the New Year. This is a great honour for both player and club. We wish Jack well at representative level in the coming months.

Under 16’s switch from Football to Paintball

11 members of our under 16 squad and two of their coaches, Tom O’Malley & Dave Noble enjoyed a great day out paintballing in Shanagolden on Saturday. Luckily the weather was in our favour and the lads had a great time. Hopefully some of the lads aims are better on the pitch next time out. Team mates became rivals for the day and one coach even took out one of his own players with a shot to the back. Message – never turn your back to the ball! A big thanks to Dave Brett, who also helped with the transport. Thanks also to all the staff at Basecamp Adventure Park for looking after the lads.

U16 Premier, Newport Town AFC 2 – 8 Fairview Rangers

Saturday, October 31 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Nathan Hartigan & James Lynch

A bright Saturday October afternoon saw our U16’s take on Fairview at home which was always going to be a tricky fixture against a team going well in the local premier league.

Newport’s cause wasn’t helped by a squad decimated due to illness, injury and players being unavailable. It meant to a reshape of the team and players having to play out of their normal positions. That being said Newport played some neat football with only 10 players and scored two very well worked goals and will look forward to the return fixture, when we will hopefully have a full strength squad to choose from. U16, Premier, Limerick FC 9 – 0 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, September 12 (Hogan Park)

Following their titanic 2-2 midweek draw with Aisling, the under 16’s were looking forward to visiting Hogan Park and the challenge of playing Limerick FC, one of the top sides in the region. Unfortunately due to suspension and unavailability, we were missing a number of key players, which was going to make an already hard job even more difficult.

The lads started brightly and kept things compact and were working well defensively. Unfortunately Newport fell behind to two quick fire Limerick goals in the second quarter and then the hosts scored a further 2 before the break to make it 4-0 at half time. Continue reading

U16, Premier, Newport Town AFC 2 – 2 Aisling Annacotty

Monday, September 7 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport Scorers: Jordan Mooney & Elliott Slattery (pen)

Monday evening saw Newport U16s welcome local rivals Aisling Annacotty to Derryleigh Park for their premier league encounter in what was always going to be a hard fought game with nothing easily won or lost.

Newport got into their rhythm relatively early in the game and took the lead when good pressure from the team in the oppositions half paid dividends as Nathan Hartigan closed down an out of position goalkeeper to lay an excellent ball back to Jordan Mooney who finished with an exquisite lob from 25 yards, a lead which Newport took to the half- time break.

Annacotty came out of the blocks early in the second half and quickly reduced the deficit with a back post header from a well taken corner. Aisling at this stage had the bit between their teeth, and despite some excellent defending from our boys and Newport having been reduced to 10 men for most of the second half, the visitors took the lead with a strike that went in off the underneath of the crossbar. 2-1 to Annacotty.
