Our U13 girls played their first league game of the 2018-19 season today away to Borrisokane. Newport took the lead 1-0 halfway through the first half with a great run from midfield by Aoife Mellerick who took on 3 players before putting the ball past the keeper. Borrisokane came back fighting and after defending a corner from Newport they counter attacked and scored the equaliser. They quickly followed this up with a second and Newport went in 2-1 down at half time. Rob Bailey gave some words of advice at half time and Newport started the second half in control of the game and got a deserving equaliser early in the half. Unfortunately the game had to be stopped with about 10 mins to go due to an injury to one of the Borrisokane players. The referee made the right choice in stopping the game and both teams start the season with a point. Newport U13 girls would like to send best wishes to the injured player and we hope she recovers quickly. Our goalie for the match Cliodhna Lenihan played very well and pulled off one excellent save that showed her cat like skills. Our defence of Laura Parsons, Caoimhe Healy, Muireann Ryan and Joanna Van Aelst were resolute. Our midfield of Isabelle Ivers, Lucy Bailey, Aoife Mellerick, Eimear Ryan and Caoimhe Troy all played their part defending and attacking. Our forwards of Slaine Goodwin, Clodagh Healy and Sinead O Riordan gave the Borrisokane defence plenty of work to do. A few of our players today were new and this was their first ever soccer match although you wouldn’t have known that if you were watching the game as all the girls played very well. Training continues on Wed night at 7pm sharp.

Our annual end-of-season awards ceremony took place in a packed Community Centre last Friday and proved once again to be a very enjoyable evening. The size of the crowd and the number of players in attendance really shows that the club continues to get bigger and stronger every year. The club’s Chairperson, Ger Healy welcomed everyone before the Event M.C, Dave Noble gave a rundown of the achievements both on and off the field during the past season including league & cup honours, players selected for league representative teams, sold out Easter & Summer Camps, the growth in playing numbers and developments in Derryleigh Park. As we continue to grow year on year to cater for the youth in the local community, he had a special thanks for the coaches, assistant coaches etc who give endless hours of their time to our young players. The parents were also acknowledged for their continued support and co-operation.

Membership of NTAFC for the coming 2018/2019 season is now open. Membership runs from August to July. As an amateur volunteer based football club, we’ve committed to meeting the repayments on the clubhouse loan in excess of €250,000, bringing the total investment to date of €1.2m in Derryleigh Park. We see this as an investment in our local youth, their future as well as being a valuable resource for our community. Everyone’s support and patronage of the club, helps make our vision a reality.
This coming season, we will have upwards on 400 players playing on over 30 teams from Nippers to the Junior A team. Running a club of this size is a very costly business both on and off the pitch and the membership fee is an integral part of our income.

Our U13 did the DOUBLE today by winning the NTSFL cup. This follows on from being crowned league champions earlier in the week. These group of girls have gone the whole season unbeaten and have only had one goal scored against them. They have trained hard under the guidance of John O’Hora and Patricia Kennedy. This was a tough game against Knigh United who gave the Newport girls a hard battle. The game finished 3-0 to Newport who had to wait for the second half to start scoring. Thanks to the NTSFL again for their continued support for the promotion of girls soccer in the region. Thanks to the officials and Killavilla United AFC for the excellent condition of the pitches. Thanks to all the parents who have supported this group all season. (The girls will appreciate it when they are old and look back on these pictures!!!). Onwards and upwards now for these group of girls as we move up to 11 a side football next season.
