On Saturday, Newport U13 girls hosted the league leaders Knigh Utd in Derryleigh Park.
Newport were playing into the wind in the first half but this did not hinder them as they started with a solid performance. The Newport keeper Emma Moloney and defenders Aisling O’Gorman, Sarah Kelly and later in the half, Kate Harvey and Milla Harte had their work cut out for them. Knigh were physical and organised, constantly reminding Newport of why they were top of the table. Throughout the half, Newport midfielders and forwards, conducted themselves well with some good passing football, a number of shots on target from Rachel Carey, Abbie Lenihan, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Leah Moran and Skye Sheehy were saved by the impressive Knigh keeper. Towards the end of the first half and against the run of play, Knigh scored from about 15 metres out. HT 0-1 Continue reading

U13 Girls v Borrisokane
Saturday, March 19 2016 (Borrisokane)
Newport scorer: Abbie Lenihan
Newport U13 girls travelled to Borrisokane on Saturday to play the Borrisokane U13 girls, at a venue that produced Newport’s biggest defeat last season. This fixture was never going to be an easy encounter.
Newport won the toss, and Captain Aisling O’Gorman opted to play with the wind. The girls started off strong right from the kick off with a powerful run down the line by Skye Sheehy who crossed the ball into Rachel Carey who took the first shot of the day on target, which was saved by the keeper. Borrisokane countered and were met by an efficient defence in Aisling O’Gorman and Sarah Kelly. Newport midfielders and forwards, Skye, Abbie Lenihan, Rachel and Roisin Power kept the pressure on with a number of positive passages of play. Towards the end of the first half, the pressure paid off as a long range clearance by sub Kate Harvey found Rachel who passed it on to Abbie, she broke through 2 of the Borrisokane defenders and beat the keeper to score a great goal! Saturday, March 12 2016 (Birdhill)
Newport U13 girls travelled to Birdhill for the away leg of this much anticipated derby fixture. It was a tightly contested battle with very little between the two teams. From the early stages of the half, Birdhill attacked with intent but Newport’s defence (Sarah Kelly, Sarah Finn and Kate Harvey) held strong, proving to be a challenge to get past. Newport’s keeper, Anita Whelton produced 2 first rate saves in the half. The midfield/forward combination of Rachel Carey, Skye Sheehy, Leah Moran, Kaitlyn Bradshaw and Roisin Power played some beautiful passing football and provided some good opportunities, but unfortunately they could not get past an in form Birdhill keeper. Newport Girls under 13 team travelled to Ballymackey to play Ballymackey B on Tuesday night. Conditions were perfect for an epic encounter and that is exactly what we got.
Newport showed great form in the first half. Rachel Carey, Amber Deegan, Skye Sheehy and Roisin Power played a positive attacking brand of football that would make any Premiership manager proud. It was a tightly contested half that resulted in a number of shots on target from Skye and Roisin. Defensively, Sarah Kelly and Kate Harvey were rock solid. The teams went into the half-time break 0-0.
The 2nd half brought in the super subs, Milla Harte, Leah Moran, Leona Burke, Mara van Aelst and Aisling O’Gorman. Another end to end half with very few opportunities to score. Leah Moran almost broke the deadlock with a great shot on target, which was met by an equally impressive save. The score remained level until the last minute of the game when Ballymackey finally broke through and scored what would be the only goal of the game. Newport’s goalkeeper Emma Moloney made an impressive 7 saves in what was an excellent performance against a very experienced Ballymackey side.
Squad: Emma Moloney, Kate Harvey, Sarah Kelly, Rachel Carey, Amber Deegan, Skye Sheehy, Roisin Power, Milla Harte, Leah Moran, Mara van Aelst, Aisling O’Gorman, Leona Burke.

Newport scorer: Roisin Power
Newport u13 girls travelled to Ballymackey to play the Ballymackey ‘A’ side on Saturday in the North Tipperary u13 schoolgirls’ league. In what can only be described as Arctic conditions, the girls braved the elements in a game where the score did not reflect the effort and quality of play put in by the Newport side.
Ballymackey went 2 – 0 ahead in the first half with 2 excellent goals including a 20m free kick into the top right hand corner.
Roisin Power with assistance from a strong defensive clearance from Newport beat the keeper to score a great goal bringing the score to 2-1. Newport rallied and despite a very strong attacking effort could not level the game. Continue reading
