NTSFL, U13 Girls Cup, Birdhill 2 – 1 Newport Town AFC, (AET 1-1)

U13 Girls v Birdhill April 11 2016

U13 Girls v Birdhill

Monday, April 11 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorer: Kaitlyn Bradshaw

Newport schoolgirls’ u13 team bowed out of the North Tipperary cup in style on Monday evening.

In a fixture that was moved to Derryleigh park astroturf due to the recent heavy rainfall, our girls hosted Birdhill. This year has already produced two epic encounters between these two neighbouring teams and this derby was no different.

Newport got off to a rocky start with Birdhill scoring in the opening minutes of the game, but the girls rallied and quickly found their form again. Defensively Sarah Kelly and Sarah Finn had their work cut out for them but worked hard to keep a determined Birdhill team out. Emma Moloney was in inspired form in goals and must have stopped about 6 strong attempts at goal in the first half alone including one long range chip into the top corner that required her to perform a full stretch save with only her finger tips left to perform the save of the day. In midfield and up front the energetic performances from Rachel Carey, Abbie Lenihan, Skye Sheehy and Kaitlyn Bradshaw (Captain for the day) ensured that Newport remained competitive. HT 0-1 to Birdhill. Continue reading

NTSFL, U13 Girls, Knigh Utd 9 – 3 Newport Town AFC

U13 Girls v Knigh Utd April 9 2016

U13 Girls v Knigh Utd

Saturday, April 9 2016 (Knigh)

Newport scorers: Rachel Carey, Skye Sheehy & Kate Bradshaw.

Newport u13 girls travelled to Knigh for their last league fixture of the season. Knigh won the league about 3 weekends ago, and after the last encounter in Derryleigh Park, we knew we were in for a challenge. Newport held Knigh in the first half with an impressive display from all the girls. Defensively, Sarah Kelly, Leah Moran and keeper Emma Moloney impressed with a fearless performance. Our midfielders and forwards, Sarah Finn, Roisin Power, Rachel Carey, Kate Harvey and Kaitlyn Bradshaw put together a series of attacking passages of play, which resulted in a number of shots on target for Newport that unfortunately did not get past the Knigh keeper. Knigh went into the break in the lead. Continue reading

U13 Girls, Newport Town AFC 0 – 5 Knigh Utd

U13 Girls v Knigh Utd March 26 2016
Saturday, March 26 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

On Saturday, Newport U13 girls hosted the league leaders Knigh Utd in Derryleigh Park.

Newport were playing into the wind in the first half but this did not hinder them as they started with a solid performance. The Newport keeper Emma Moloney and defenders Aisling O’Gorman, Sarah Kelly and later in the half, Kate Harvey and Milla Harte had their work cut out for them. Knigh were physical and organised, constantly reminding Newport of why they were top of the table. Throughout the half, Newport midfielders and forwards, conducted themselves well with some good passing football, a number of shots on target from Rachel Carey, Abbie Lenihan, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Leah Moran and Skye Sheehy were saved by the impressive Knigh keeper. Towards the end of the first half and against the run of play, Knigh scored from about 15 metres out. HT 0-1 Continue reading

U13 Girls, Borrisokane 0 – 1 Newport Town AFC

U13 Girls v Ballymackey March 19 2016

U13 Girls v Borrisokane

Saturday, March 19 2016 (Borrisokane)

Newport scorer: Abbie Lenihan

Newport U13 girls travelled to Borrisokane on Saturday to play the Borrisokane U13 girls, at a venue that produced Newport’s biggest defeat last season. This fixture was never going to be an easy encounter.

Newport won the toss, and Captain Aisling O’Gorman opted to play with the wind. The girls started off strong right from the kick off with a powerful run down the line by Skye Sheehy who crossed the ball into Rachel Carey who took the first shot of the day on target, which was saved by the keeper. Borrisokane countered and were met by an efficient defence in Aisling O’Gorman and Sarah Kelly. Newport midfielders and forwards, Skye, Abbie Lenihan, Rachel and Roisin Power kept the pressure on with a number of positive passages of play. Towards the end of the first half, the pressure paid off as a long range clearance by sub Kate Harvey found Rachel who passed it on to Abbie, she broke through 2 of the Borrisokane defenders and beat the keeper to score a great goal! U13 Girls, Birdhill 1 – 0 Newport Town AFC

U13 Girls v Birdhill March 12 2016
Saturday, March 12 2016 (Birdhill)

Newport U13 girls travelled to Birdhill for the away leg of this much anticipated derby fixture. It was a tightly contested battle with very little between the two teams. From the early stages of the half, Birdhill attacked with intent but Newport’s defence (Sarah Kelly, Sarah Finn and Kate Harvey) held strong, proving to be a challenge to get past. Newport’s keeper, Anita Whelton produced 2 first rate saves in the half. The midfield/forward combination of Rachel Carey, Skye Sheehy, Leah Moran, Kaitlyn Bradshaw and Roisin Power played some beautiful passing football and provided some good opportunities, but unfortunately they could not get past an in form Birdhill keeper. HT 0-0 Continue reading
