Schoolboy / Schoolgirl Awards

Our annual end-of-season awards ceremony took place in a packed Community Centre last Friday and proved once again to be a very enjoyable evening. The size of the crowd and the number of players in attendance really shows that the club continues to get bigger and stronger every year. The club’s Chairperson, Ger Healy welcomed everyone before the Event M.C, Dave Noble gave a rundown of the achievements both on and off the field during the past season including league & cup honours, players selected for league representative teams, sold out Easter & Summer Camps, the growth in playing numbers and developments in Derryleigh Park. As we continue to grow year on year to cater for the youth in the local community, he had a special thanks for the coaches, assistant coaches etc who give endless hours of their time to our young players. The parents were also acknowledged for their continued support and co-operation.

All of our younger non-competitive players received a medal and certificate from the club, while the competitive players from the under 12’s right up to the under 16’s, were in contention for Most Improved Player and Player of the Year Awards. 2018/2019 Membership Fee & Player Registration

Membership of NTAFC for the coming 2018/2019 season is now open. Membership runs from August to July. As an amateur volunteer based football club, we’ve committed to meeting the repayments on the clubhouse loan in excess of €250,000, bringing the total investment to date of €1.2m in Derryleigh Park. We see this as an investment in our local youth, their future as well as being a valuable resource for our community. Everyone’s support and patronage of the club, helps make our vision a reality.

This coming season, we will have upwards on 400 players playing on over 30 teams from Nippers to the Junior A team. Running a club of this size is a very costly business both on and off the pitch and the membership fee is an integral part of our income.

U14 Girls Cup Final, Newport Town AFC 0-1 Borrisokane

Saturday, May 12 2018 (Villa Park)

On a beautiful Saturday morning we travelled to Villa Park for the Cup Final. We never took advantage of the breeze in the 1st half as we tried to break down the Borrisokane defence. It remained 0-0 at half time.

In the 2nd half both teams went looking for the opening goal and unfortunately for us, Borrisokane with a bit of luck got the only goal of the game from a set piece. We tried everything to equalise by attacking through the middle, out wide and the more direct route but the Borrisokane defence refused to budge.

I wish I could say in hindsight that if we had tried this or that we could have won but Borrisokane were worthy Cup Winners of a game played in a great spirit.

Team: Emma Wright, Eryn Kennedy, Mara Van Aelst, Jayne Hurley, Nadine Hartigan, Sarah Kelly, Robyn McNamara, Abbie Lenihan, Leah Moran, Aisling O’Gorman, Caragh Flynn, Shauna Pearson, Robyn Moloney, Aoife Kennedy, Mollie O’Hora, Chelsea King & Emily Hurley.

U14 Girls Cup Semi-Final, Newport Town AFC 3-2 BT Harps

U14 Girls v BT Harps April 28 2018
Saturday, April 28 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Shauna Pearson 2 & Leah Moran

BT were on the attack from the start and put us under enormous pressure. Just when we were finally settling down, BT launched another attack and scored the opening goal. That goal got the girls to move up another gear and after some nice passing, Shauna’s cross/shot beat the keeper to get us back in the game. With the 1st half almost over, Shauna scored her 2nd with a fantastic free kick.

In the 2nd half, both teams were in attacking mode and it made for an exciting half. BT equalised with a well taken goal and the game could have went either way. It was a great solo run and finish by Leah that settled the game. We would like to thank everybody for their support and well wishes.

Team: Emma Wright, Eryn Kennedy, Mara Van Aelst, Jayne Hurley, Mollie O’Hora, Sarah Kelly, Robyn McNamara, Abbie Lenihan, Leah Moran, Aisling O’Gorman, Caragh Flynn, Nadine Hartigan, Chelsea King, Shauna Pearson, Robyn Moloney, Emily Hurley & Aoife Kennedy.

U14 Girls, BT Harps 0-1 Newport Town AFC

U14 Girls v BT Harps April 2018
Wednesday, April 18 2018 (Roscrea Road)

Scorer: Chelsea King

We travelled to Templemore looking for a win that would keep us challenging for the league. Neither side could settle with the very strong wind that was blowing. If you had the wind in your favour, the ball travelled too far and if it was against you, you basically had to launch an attack from your own goal area and try work it up the field. With the wind in our favour during the 1st half, we couldn’t find a way through a very strong BT defence.

In the 2nd half against the wind, we held onto the ball better but again that BT defence nullified our attempts at goal. With time running out, the girls put a string of short sharp passes together and set Chelsea free to successfully slot the ball past the keeper. With seconds to go, BT were awarded a free kick on the edge of our goal area, but the girls stood strong to block the shot and cleared it to give us the 3 points.

U14 Girls Cup, Newport Town AFC 2-0 Kilavilla

U14 girls v Killavilla April 14 2018
Saturday, April 14 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Leah Moran & Chelsea King

Following on from our drawn league match with Killavilla last week, we had to play them this week in the 1st round of the cup. Leah Moran had the first real chance of the game but for an excellent save by their keeper. Shortly afterwards, Leah again broke through and this time beat the keeper for the 1st goal. With a strong cross wind, Emma was always on her guard in goals and plucked the ball from the air with confidence. Again, Sarah and Robyn were involved in breaking up the killavilla attacks. So killavilla tried the more direct route only to be stopped by the back line of Eryn, Mara, Jayne, Mollie & Caragh. We lost Abbie to an ankle injury and lost our shape for a bit but Shauna slotted into the position and steadied the team, once again. Continue reading

U14 Girls, Newport Town AFC 1-1 Killavilla

U14 Girls v Killavilla Apr 7 2018
Saturday, April 7 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorer: Chelsea King

WHAT A GAME! With both teams looking for a victory to keep pace with league leaders BT Harps. At the final whistle both teams had to settle for a point each at the end of an enthralling game. With both teams getting great support from the sidelines, the girls attacked and defended with everything they had. Killavilla scored first from a free kick at the side of our penalty area. The ball was lobbed in and with our keeper caught in the crowd, their forward headed into the net.

In the 2nd half we pressed forward looking for an equaliser and it came courtesy of Chelsea as she broke through the defence and slotted the ball past the killavilla keeper. Both teams had a chance or two to win the game but in the end, a draw was a fair result.

We are so, so proud of all the girls for they wear the Newport jersey with pride and always give us a 110%.

U14 Girls, Lough Derg 0-9 Newport Town AFC

U14 Girls v Lough Derg April 4 2018
Wednesday, April 4 2018 (Clarisford Park)

Scorers: Caragh Flynn 3, Emily Hurley 2, Chelsea King 2, Abbie Lenihan & Aoife Kennedy

With the season nearing the end, it was important to secure a win to keep us in the title race. For the first time this season, we had a complete squad to pick from. Lough Derg were defending well until Chelsea broke the deadlock and then Abbie doubled our lead to finish the first half 2-0 up.

In the 2nd half we were able to bring on a lot of fresh legs and the girls chased every ball and closed down any attempts to break out by Lough Derg. Every girl gave everything for the team as in tackles, assists & goal attempts so I’ll just mention the goal scorers. Caragh 3, Chelsea 2, Emily 2, Abbie & Aoife.

Team: Emma Wright, Eryn Kennedy, Mara Van Aelst, Jayne Hurley, Nadine Hartigan, Mollie O’Hora, Aoife Kennedy, Sarah Kelly, Robyn McNamara, Robyn Moloney, Shauna Pearson, Abbie Lenihan, Leah Moran, Aisling O’Gorman, Emily Hurley, Caragh Flynn & Chelsea King.
