U14 Girls, Ballymackey 2 – 3 Newport Town AFC

U14 Girls v Ballymackey Dec 3 2016
Saturday, December 3 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorers: Abbie Lenihan, Kaitlyn Bradshaw & Skye Sheehy

On Saturday our U14 girls travelled to Ballymackey for a crunch match that required a win for them to hold on to the top spot in the league table.

Newport started well with a series of strong attacking runs. A kick out from Rachel Carey found Abbie Lenihan who broke up the wing beating the determined Ballymackey backs and the keeper to score a great goal. Minutes later with an unlucky penalty call, Ballymackey drew level. Newport held firm and pushed hard. Kaitlyn Bradshaw was taken down in the box and a penalty awarded. Kaitlyn took the penalty like a pro and buried the ball in the back of the net putting Newport back in the lead. Ballymackey proving to be worthy opponents scored again to draw level just before the break. HT 2-2. Continue reading

U14 Girls, Birdhill 2 – 1 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, November 19 2016 (Dublin Road)

Newport scorer: Abbie Lenihan

On a morning that defied the weather forecast and turned out to be a cold but good morning for a game of soccer, Newport u14 girls travelled to Birdhill to play in a greatly anticipated derby fixture.

Newport got off to a slow start with Birdhill scoring twice in the first half. Although Mids and forwards Skye Sheehy, Sarah Finn, Kaitlyn Bradshaw, Abbie Lenihan and Rachel Carey were playing good passing football and creating a few chances, they just could not break through the seasoned Birdhill defensive lines. The break brought the chance for the Newport girls to regroup and reflect they came out with a renewed determination. The backs Kate Harvey, Leona Burke, Amber Deegan and Goalie Emma Moloney worked well together to hold Birdhill out for the entire half. Up front, the patience and determination paid off with a great goal by Abbie Lenihan. Substitutes Leah Moran and Sarah Kelly provided the fresh legs and despite throwing everything at the Birdhill defence, Newport could not get that elusive equalizer.

A very spirited performance after a rocky start. Although the result did not go our way today, there were many positives to take from the game and the girls are already looking ahead to our next fixture.

NTSFL U14 Girls
Congratulations to our Newport girls on their first U14 North Tipperary match against Kilkenny in Holycross on Sunday, November 13. The match was a special and proud day for both the club and the girls with our own Sarah Finn as Captain. The match was a tough encounter with a scoreline of 4-2 to Kilkenny, which was not not reflective of a great and determined performance by the girls.

Newport girls: Sarah Finn (Captain), Amber Deegan, Leah Moran, Abbie Lenihan and Rachel Carey (injured).

On Saturday 23rd October Newport U14 girls hosted Killavilla.

Shortly afterwards Amber Deegan made a goal saving tackle taking a heavy knock in the process. Newport girls upped their game and created some great 1 on 1 chances with Rachel, Abbie, Kaitlyn and Aisling O’Gorman all taking shots on goal but the Killavilla keeper was excellent on the day. Saturday, September 24 2016 (Derryleigh Park)

Newport scorer: Abbie Lenihan

Newport u14 girls hosted Clodiagh Rangers on Saturday afternoon. The heavy rain cleared off for what was to be an epic encounter between the #1 and #2 on the NTSFL league table.

Newport started strong, showing intent from early in the game by creating several attacking chances. Breaks from our mids Rachel Carey, Roisin Power, Skye Sheehy, Abbie Lenihan and forward Kaitlyn Bradshaw kept the Clodiagh Rangers defence on its toes. Newport hit the crossbar a few times and had a few shots saved. 20 minutes into the half Abbie broke up the middle and scored a screamer.

HT Newport 1 – 0 Clodiagh Rangers

The second half started with the same intensity and the girls made the breaks and created the chances, but just could not convert their effort into a goal.

The Newport defence of Emma Moloney (GK) Kate Harvey, Amber Deegan, Sarah Kelly, Milla Harte and Leah Moran were put through their paces as the visitors tried to equalize. They hung on bravely until 5 minutes before full time when against the run of play the opposition pounced on the slightest of chances to score the equalizer.
