After a slow start, the girls found themselves 2-0 down after 10 minutes but it was the wakeup call they needed to kick into action. The girls battled hard and improved hugely, as the players all settled into what was a very high tempo game.
Roisin Power was solid in central midfield, winning tackle after tackle and supplying some excellent forward passes. Skye Sheedy made brilliant runs down the wing, and the girls reward for their hard work came when Skye made another great run and shot, only for the keeper to fumble and see it trickle over the line.
The girls fought for so long for their equaliser, and early in the second half Kaitlyn Bradshaw was unlucky not to score with a fine effort. Jasmyne Butler constantly frustrated the home team and kept the Newport girls in the match, with a string of fine saves and denied the home team two clear cut efforts when she saved one on one with the BT Harps striker. The U16 girls were unlucky to lose to a physical Ballymackey side, after what was a hugely improved display from them in only their third match playing together. The girls kept Ballymackey at bay until the end of the first half, with Eimear Hannon and Jenny Keppel both going close. The girls conceded three goals in very quick succession but were unlucky to have a penalty appeal turned down, when Hazel McMahon was pulled to the ground in the box.
The second half saw the girls settle and work tirelessly together with Ailish Carey and Liberty Butler partnering brilliantly at the back and Rachel Carey, Hazel McMahon and Susan O’Shea all constantly causing the visitors problems. Jasmyne Butler pulled off some great saves with two back to back close range stops and denied the visitors again with an excellent save when their striker ran through one on one and Orla Imhoff then cleared. The girls pulled a goal back when the excellent Rachel Carey skipped down the wing and through the visiting defence to shoot from distance and score a fine goal. The girls all worked relentlessly to reduce the deficit with Jean Timmons, Roisin Power and Kate Harvey all fighting hard to pull another goal back and constantly pressuring the visitors defence.
However it wasn’t to be. Just as the home team looked on top and good to rescue a draw, Ballymackey broke and scored as the Newport girls pushed for another goal.
A great deal of positives to be taken from this match, especially with the younger girls stepping in and all putting in excellent performances and as this group of girls all grow together, so does their potential.
