Derryleigh Diary – April 7 2019

Juniors
The Junior A, C & U18 sides were all in league action in Derryleigh Park on a sun-soaked and action-packed day of football, that saw a total of 16 goals scored in all three games on Sunday.

The Junior A team ground out a late comeback against a dogged Southend side to eventually run out 4-2 winners in Derryleigh Park on Sunday morning. The goals came from Brian O’Sullivan (3) & James Lynch. This win sees third-placed Newport close the gap on the top two in the promotion race and with just 6 league games remaining, starting with the visit of Caherdavin this Thursday evening, a tense & exciting end to the season lies ahead in the coming weeks. Just two of the top three teams will gain promotion to Div 1A. Click here for the match report.

At the same time, on the bottom pitch, the C team welcomed near neighbours, Murroe C to Derryleigh Park in a local derby. A win for Newport would have seen them climb off the bottom of the Div 4 table and level with Murroe and to give this fixture a little twist, Murroe had some former Newport players in their ranks. Unfortunately it was Murroe who ran out 3-0 winners and extend the gap between themselves and Newport.

The U18s played out a cracking league encounter against Caherdavin Celtic on Sunday afternoon. In a must-win game for both sides to maintain the pressure on league leaders Cals, it was Newport who snatched all 3 points on offer with a brilliant Daniel Egan goal deep into injury time to secure a 4-3 victory. With midweek games now scheduled and the end of season looming, the fixture schedule will be fairly congested for the next few weeks. The Junior A team are home to Caherdavin this Thursday (6.30pm) and away to Shelbourne on Tuesday, April 16. The Bs are home to Athlunkard Villa in the Div 2B cup semi-final next Sunday (2pm). The Cs are away to Coonagh on Sunday (2pm). U18s are away to Aisling Annacotty next Sunday (2pm). The U17s are away to Nenagh next Saturday (6.30) and away to Fairview on Tuesday, April 16 (6.30pm).

Schoolboys
The U16A squad maintained their excellent unbeaten start to the season with a very good 3-1 win at home to Geraldines with goals coming from Adam McEvoy, Daniel Egan & Calum Grant. This makes it 2 wins & 1 draw from their opening 3 games in the Premier League and they currently sit at the top of the table. Unfortunately the U16Bs lost 3-1 at home to Regional Utd A with the goal coming from Calum Merrigan. This makes it 2 wins & 2 defeats in the opening 4 games in a very tough Div 1.

Both our U14 sides also had mixed results. Missing a few players, the A team lost 4-2 away to unbeaten Regional Utd in Div 1 with goals coming from David Healy & Alex O’Toole. After 3 wins on the trot, these were Newport’s first dropped points of the season. Meanwhile the Bs recorded an excellent 6-3 win at home to Regional Utd C with Cathal Lenihan 3, Conor Gavin 2 & Evan Moran on the score-sheet and the win moves them to the top of Div 2.

The U12s travelled to play Bridge Celtic last Friday night and were very unlucky to lose on a 2-1 scoreline. Interestingly the Newport scorer was keeper, Cillian Collins, who played out field for some of the game.

Our U8 & U10 sides were also in non-competitive action. As part of the FAI’s policy on non-competitive football, scores are not recorded and league tables are not kept for these sides. However all the teams played in very exciting & competitive games with some great goals scored and excellent team displays.

Well done to our U14 keeper, Mark Forde, who has been called into the LDSL U14 Development Training Squad, where he joins fellow Newport player, Aaron Coleman. The final squad for the Kennedy Cup will be finalised towards the end of April. Best of luck lads

This Wednesday, the U13s are home to Caherconlish (6.30pm). On Friday, both U10 sides are at home at 6.30pm, the Blues play Janesboro & the Browns play Aisling Annacotty. On Saturday, the U9s start their season when they travel to Corbally (9.45am), U11 Reds are away to Mungret Regional (11am), U11 Browns are home to Summerville (11am), U13s are away to Bridge Celtic (11am) and the U15s are away to Aisling Annacotty A (3.30pm). On Monday, both U16 sides are in action, when the A team are away to Shelbourne (6.30) and the Bs are home to Corbally B (6.30pm).

With so many upcoming games, keep up to date on all fixtures & results on the official club website.

Schoolgirls
There were no competitive schoolgirl games over the weekend but our U10 schoolgirls travelled to Ballymackey for an end of season blitz with teams from Knigh, Lough Derg, Ballymackey, Holycross, Borrisokane & Moneygall. Great fun had by all, loads of goals and some super skills on display. Well done girls & coaches

This week it’s all cup games for the girls. On Tuesday, the U15s are away to Killavilla (6.30pm), on Thursday the U14s are home to Borrisokane (6.45pm) and on Saturday the U13s are home to Shinrone (11am).

Best of luck to the 1st Year Girls from St. Marys’ Secondary School, Newport in the FAI Schools Munster Cup Final on Tuesday, when they play Presentation, Thurles in Cahir.
