After the highs of last week the A team were brought firmly back down to earth this weekend when they suffered a very disappointing 1-0 loss away to Knockainey. It’s never an easy place to get a result and the task was made even more difficult due to a number of regulars missing from the starting team due to injury, suspension and other commitments. This was a game that is better being placed in the archives and not in the memory bank as it was a fairly poor performance and hopefully not a result that comes back to haunt us later in the season.
The Bs also suffered a disappointing away defeat when they lost 2-1 away to Holycross. Before the game Newport were in third and Holycross were in fourth but this result sees the sides swap places. Tristan O’Sullivan scored from the spot for Newport.
The Cs almost staged a great comeback when losing 4-0 at home to Fairview C with 10 minutes remaining on the clock. Goals from Jamie Daly, Devon Ryan and an O.G. brought the game back to 4-3 but try as they might Newport couldn’t manage an equaliser.
Next Sunday the Junior A side are home to Granville (11am) and the U17s are home to Fairview (2.15pm). After next weekend, the Christmas break kicks in with games resuming on January 5.
Newport have been drawn away to Premier side Aisling Annacotty AFC in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup with the game to take place on the weekend of January 12/13.
The draw has taken place for this season’s Lawson Cup. In the first round Newport have been drawn at home to Div 3B side Northside Legacy, with the winner playing Premier side Kilmallock in round 2.
The U15s were the only schoolgirlside in action as the U13 game away to Ballymackey was called off. The U15s travelled to play Killavilla and suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat with Abbie Lenihan scoring a consolation goal.
Next Saturday, the U17s are away to Ballymackey (11.30am) and the U12s are away to Killavilla (10.00am).
