Derryleigh Diary – February 17 2019

Newport advanced to the quarter-finals of this season’s Lawson Cup following a great 4-3 comeback win over Hyde Rangers in Derryleigh Park on Sunday morning. Two goals from Christy Doyle, a penalty from Brian O’Sullivan & a late winner from substitute, Dave Kenny ensured that we will make the away trip to fellow Div 1B side, Hill Celtic in the last eight stage. The B’s were looking to build up some momentum ahead of their divisional cup when they welcomed unbeaten league leaders Pallasgreen to Derryleigh Park on Sunday afternoon. Despite a good performance and pushing the leaders all the way, it was the visitors who were delighted to take all three points on offer after a 3-2 win. Youngsters, Nathan Hartigan & Colin Coleman were on the score-sheet for Newport.

The C’s, who were desperately in search of their first win of the season faced a difficult game away to Shelbourne on Sunday morning. Unfortunately it was the home side who ran out 4-0 winners.

The U18s were looking to keep the pressure on league leaders, Cals, by hoping to win all three points on offer away to Corbally on Sunday afternoon. In the reverse fixture back in August, Newport ran out 8-3 winners but as the lads found out there are no easy games in this division and Corbally got some revenge for the previous defeat by inflicting a 4-2 defeat on Newport. This was a very disappointing result for the lads and they will know that the performance was way below what they are capable of. Darren Collins and Jack O’Carroll scored the Newport goals. Special mention for Haytam Kamil & Jack O’Sullivan who both made their debuts and impressed, despite the result.

Next Sunday, the A’s re-scheduled league game away to Balylanders takes place at 11am. The B’s are away to Caherdavin in the first round of the Div 2B cup (2.15pm), the C’s are home to Aisling in the league (11am) and the U17s are home to Nenagh in the league (2.15pm).

The new calendar schoolboy season finally gets underway next Saturday with games for our U16 & U14 sides. U14A are home to Mungret Regional (11am), U14B are away to Summerville (11am), U16A are home to Fairview (12.30pm) and the U16Bs are away to Aisling Annacotty C (2pm).

The U13 & U15 leagues will commence on March 2, U12s on March 9, U11s on April 1, U8s & U10s on April 13 and the U7s on April 27.

There will be no games fixed for any Saturday in the month of June and the two weeks in July. The summer break will be from July 13th to August 31st. There will also be a break in late May/June for sides for the Kennedy Cup, Leaving Cert and Junior cert age groups. Easter weekend Saturday and Monday and the May Bank Holiday on May 6 will be free from fixtures. In the second half of the season Sept 2nd to November 30, clubs will have league games and local cups will start on September 14th.

The U17 girls recorded a great 7-5 win at home to Ballymackey in a 12 goal thriller. A game that was full of goals, excitement, drama and a 4 goal haul for U14 player, Shauna Pearson. The other Newport goals came from Rachel Carey (2) & Chelsea King. With 2 games remaining, the girls are now level on points with BT Harps, who have a game less played. Newport’s remaining games are away to Killavilla & Ballymackey, so they will be hoping to win both and hope that BT Harps slip up along the way.

Unfortunately the U13 girls suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Ballymackey with Lauren Bailey scoring the Newport goal.

Next Saturday, the U17s are the only side in action when they are away to Killavilla at 11.30am.

Road Safety
We would ask everyone driving to and from Derryleigh Park to take extra care on the ‘pathless’ stretch of road between the GAA field and the soccer pitch as there have been a few narrow misses involving pedestrians in the recent past, especially in the dusk/dark. Despite the club’s best efforts to dissuade people from walking to and from Derryleigh, some continue to do so and have also ignored previous advice to wear high visibility clothing. Once again, we would ask all road users, both drivers and pedestrians to take extra care and avoid walking this stretch of road, if at all possible. If you must walk, please be safe and be seen.
