Derryleigh Diary – July 1 2018

Our junior teams are returning for pre-season training in the next week in anticipation of the new junior season, which commences on Thursday 16th August. Once again we will have five junior teams (A, B, C, U18 & U17).

Summer Soccer Camps:
The first of our summer camps started on Monday with 150 boys & girls taking part, which makes it one of the biggest camps in the entire region. There are still some spaces left on our second camp from August 6-10 but places are filling fast so book soon to avoid disappointment on

Shout out to our schoolgirl players Chealsea King, Shauna Pearson and Abbie Lenihan who represented the club on the U14 NTSFL side in the Gaynor Cup hosted in UL last week. Special mention for Abbie who captained the squad, a huge honour for both her and our club.

Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Awards and Registration Night:
The NTAFC Schoolboy / Schoolgirl awards for last season and Registration for the 2018/2019 season takes place on Friday, July 27 in the Community Centre. The awards are for the Newport Nippers up to U16s. Player Registration begins at 6pm and the Awards Ceremony will commence at 7pm. This promises to be another great occasion for the club and all players and their families are welcome to attend. Awards up for grabs are Players of the Year, Most Improved Players and Overall Schoolboy/Schoolgirl of the Year (competitive teams only). This event continues to grow each season and this year should be no different. We look forward to seeing all our players and their families on the night. All are welcome.

FAI Safeguarding 1 Child Welfare Course:
We are hosting a FAI Safeguarding 1 course in our Derryleigh Clubhouse on Wednesday 11th July from 7-10pm. The fee is €10. This is the 3 Hour Basic Awareness Child Welfare Workshop that all coaches must now complete by Law. For anyone interested in taking part you can book your place at Please be advised this is the only way to book a place on the course!

Clothing Collection:
Due to popular demand, the soccer club in conjunction with the National Council for the Blind are once again organising an old clothes collection as a fundraiser for our Schoolboy/Schoolgirl section. Simply drop your bags of unwanted clothes to Derryleigh Park on Saturdays during July & August from 10am-2pm (drop under clubhouse canopy). We will accept old clothes, shoes (in pairs), handbags, blankets & bed linen (NO duvets/pillows). Please contact Sarah (087-2826155), Amanda (086-0442323) or Maeve (086-8534966) for more info or collection of bags if necessary.

Last Man Standing is Coming Back:
Last Man Standing will be returning for the start of the new Premier League season in August. Entry will be €10. Make the premiership weekends more interesting, challenge your friends & family, while supporting the soccer club. If you haven’t played before, it’s easy. Each game week you will be texted the fixture list, you pick the Premiership team that you think will win their game and text back your selection. If your team wins their game, you are through to the next round. You can’t pick the same team twice. If they lose or draw, then you are out. This continues until the Last Man or Woman is left standing. As always, your support is greatly appreciated. Entry details to follow in the coming weeks.

There was no winner of last week’s lotto. The lucky numbers were 13, 17, 24 & 27. This week’s jackpot is €3,850. Thanks as always to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.
