Derryleigh Diary – July 7 2019

Schoolboys
Well done to our U12 side on a great 4-3 win away to Fairview last Monday evening. The Fairgreen is never an easy place to go and get a win. Scorers for Newport were Conor Ryan 2, Christopher O’Connor & Dara Moloughney.

Hard luck to the U16B side that lost 6-2 away to a strong Summerville side last Tuesday. It could have been closer as Newport missed two pens. Johnny Ryan & Nathan O’Donoghue were on the mark for NTAFC.

The U13 side had a good win on the road last Wednesday, when they beat Aisling Annacotty C 4-3 in Killonan. The Newport scorers were Conor O’Brien 2, Evan Moran & Conor Molamphy.

Last Thursday, the U15s made the trip to Dooradoyle to play Regional in the Premier League and unfortunately lost 4-1. This was a score line which wasn’t a true reflection of the effort the lads put in. Missing a number of regulars, Newport really put it up to the Premier League leaders but when Lady Luck seems to no longer be on your side and you come up against a keeper in inspired form, then sometimes results don’t go your way. Keep plugging away lads and don’t let the heads drop. Stephen Madden scored a very good goal for Newport.

Last Friday, our under 14A side recorded an excellent 3-1 win over Div 1 league leaders Regional United in Derryleigh Park. The Newport scorers were Nathan Bridgeman (2) & Callum O’Connell. Unfortunately a severely depleted U16A side (missing a number of players due to holidays & Longitude) suffered a disappointing home defeat to Premier league leaders Aisling Annacotty.
Our U8, U9, U10 and U11 sides were also in non-competitive action. The U9s had their last league game before the summer break away to Regional last Tuesday. It was a lovely evening for a game of ball and the lads played some nice football. The U8 Nippers were also away to Regional in Dooradoyle. The boys & girls from both sides had some great fun in very exciting games on a lovely sunny evening. Thanks to all the parents & supporters who travelled in to really get behind the players. Both U10 sides were in action against Shelbourne & Aisling Annacotty and played out two excellent & entertaining games. There was a path worn to Dooradoyle last week as the U11 Browns also played Regional and it was a great team effort from a super bunch of players. Well done to all our players who represented the club so well in the past week.

This week sees the last of the schoolboy games before the summer break. Monday, July 8, U15 are home to Carew Park (7pm) and the U7s are home to Mungret Regional (7pm). Wednesday, July 10, U16A are home to Fairview (7.30pm) and U16B are away to Regional (8pm. U10 Blues are home to Geraldines (6.30pm) and U10 Browns are away to Summerville (7pm). Friday, July 12, U15s are away to Aisling Annacotty B (7pm). The schoolboy summer break will be from July 13 to September 2.

With so many games taking place, keep up to date on all fixtures & results on the official club website www.newporttownafc.com

Schoolgirls
Well done to all our schoolgirl teams and players who picked up awards at the NTSFL Awards Night last Friday night. The new schoolgirl season is due to commence on Saturday, August 31.

Summer Camps
It’s less than a week to the start of the first of our FAI Summer Soccer Schools. The camp starts next Monday, July 15 and is fully booked with 150 boys & girls taking part; therefore no extra walk-up bookings can be taken. However there are still some spaces left on our second camp from August 19-23. Book soon to avoid disappointment on www.summersoccerschools.ie If you are already booked on the July camp, you can also do the August camp at a reduced price of €55.

Lotto
There was no winner of this week’s club’s lotto and the jackpot is now €6,500 with the next draw taking place on Saturday, July 13 in Gleeson’s Bar. The numbers drawn were 6, 8, 10 & 26. Thanks, as always, to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.

Community Games
Unfortunately the Newport U12 & U15 girls and U13 & U15 boys and U15 girls soccer sides were all beaten in the semi-finals of the Munster Community Games Finals in Tralee last weekend. All the sides put in great performances but it just wasn’t to be.
