Derryleigh Diary – March 10 2019

Unfortunately the poor weather pood paid to last weekend’s junior fixtures with the Limerick District League calling a blanket call-off of all junior games.

There are no junior games scheduled over the St. Patrick’s weekend.

The U14A made it two wins from two games with an excellent 6-3 win at home to Geraldines with goals from Conor Brett 2, Calum O’Connell, Alex O’Toole, Aaron Coleman & Nathan Bridgeman. Unfortunately the U14Bs lost 5-1 at home to Parkville with Conor Gavan scoring the consolation goal for Newport.

Both our U16 sides were also in action. The A team recorded a very good 2-2 draw away to Mungret with goals from Daniel Egan & Diarmuid O’Riordan. A win and a draw in their opening games is a good start to the Premier League. The B side suffered their first defeat in a long time when they went down 5-2 away to a very good Carew Park side on Saturday afternoon. Luke Ryan scored both goals.

The U12s got their season off to a great start with a very impressive 3-2 win away to Pike Rovers with the goals coming from Jack Cosgrave 2 & Dara Moloughney.

Next Saturday sees just two of our schoolboy sides in action. The U15s are home to Regional (11am) and the U13s are away to Pike Rovers B (12.30pm).

Having already won the league title a few weeks back, the U14 girls received their league trophy after their final league game of the season when they won 5-0 away to Lough Derg. Aoife Mellerick 2, Emily Hurley, Amelia Healy & Shauna Pearson were the Newport scorers. This squad keep going from strength to strength having won the League & Cup Double last season. Special mention for their hard-working, dedicated & enthusiastic coaches John O’Hora & Trish Kennedy. Well done girls on bringing another trophy back to Derryleigh Park.

Next Saturday the U18 girls welcome Birdhill to Derryleigh Park in the Cup at 2pm. The U13 girls are away to Ballymackey in the league at 11.30am.

Last Man Standing
118 players started round 3 of our Last Man Standing competition and after the weekend’s Premier League games 28 were eliminated due to the failure of Spurs, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Chelsea & Man Utd to win their games. As there is a curtailed fixture list next weekend ( only 5 games) and international games the following weekend, we will skip the next round of Premier League fixtures and 90 players will go into round 4, which will take place over the weekend of March 30/31.

St. Patrick’s Parade
Thanks to all our players, coaches, parents & supporters who marched in the Newport Parade last Saturday. It was great to see the whole community out in force. Thanks again to the hard-working and dedicated Parade committee who ensure that the parade goes ahead every year. Well done also to the volunteers from the soccer club who assisted with the erection and dismantling of the street barriers. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from everyone in Newport Town AFC.

There was no winner of this week’s club’s lotto and the jackpot is now €5,650 with the next draw taking place on Saturday, March 16 in O’Sullivan’s Bar. The numbers drawn were 10, 18, 27 & 29. Thanks, as always, to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.
