Derryleigh Diary – March 17 2019

There were no junior games scheduled over the St. Patrick’s weekend. Next Sunday, the Junior A & B sides are in action. The A’s are away to Hill Celtic in the re-scheduled quarter-final of the Lawson Cup, which is the biggest & most prestigious local cup competition. The winner can look forward to playing the winners of Ballynanty v Pike Rovers /Prospect in the semi-final. Like Newport, Hill Celtic are also in Div 1B and currently lie one place ahead of us in second place. Newport won the only game between the sides so far this season in a cracking league encounter back in September. The score was 2-1 with Christy Doyle & Dave Kennedy on the score-sheet. Hill Celtic are currently on a very good run of form and will prove to be very tough opposition on their home patch. There’s very little between both sides and with the reward of a Lawson Cup semi-final on offer, this game could potentially go all the way to penalties. Kick-off in Hogan Park is at 11am and we hope to see a big Newport crowd at the game to get behind the lads in one of the biggest games of the season.

The B’s will be in league action at the same time away to Mungret Regional in their penultimate league game of the season. Mungret are in second place and will be doing their best to ensure that Newport don’t put a dent in their promotion hopes.

Inter-League Representation
Good luck to our Youth players, Darren Collins & Jack Noble, who are in the Limerick District League inter-league Youth squad that play the Inishowen (Donegal) League in the semi-final of the FAI Inter-League competiton in Jackman Park next Sunday at 1.00pm.

Unfortunately the bad weather last weekend led to the Limerick District League calling a blanket postponement of all schoolboy games.

Next Saturday sees the even age competitive schoolboy sides in action. The U12s are away to Janesboro (11am), U14A are away to Aisling Annacotty B (2pm), U14B are away to Corbally B (2pm) and U16B are home to Summerville Rovers (11am).

All schoolboy fixtures up to April 24 are now listed in the fixtures section of our website.

Like the schoolboys the scheduled schoolgirl games also fell foul of the weather at the weekend.

Next Saturday the U18 girls welcome Birdhill to Derryleigh Park in the Cup at 2.00pm. The U12 girls are away to Ballymackey in the Cup at 10.45am and the U10 girls host a blitz in Derryleigh Park at 2pm.

Soccer Sisters Easter Camp
Newport Town AFC launched the Soccer Sisters Easter Camp last week. Our popular camp for girls aged 6-14 will run on April 17 & 18 in Derryleigh Park. This year, thanks to Aviva & the FAI, this year’s camp will be FREE and all participants will get an exclusive Soccer Sisters t-shirt. The camp sold out in record time and all 80 places are gone.

There was no winner of this week’s club’s lotto and the jackpot is now €5,700 with the next draw taking place on Saturday, March 23 in Ryan’s Bar. The numbers drawn were 7, 25, 27 & 29. Thanks, as always, to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.
