A depleted A team finished off their league campaign with a 5-2 defeat away to Shelbourne on Saturday evening. The goals were scored by Aidan O’Brien and an O.G. After a difficult start to the season, a strong second half of the campaign saw the A’s finish Div 1B in sixth place.
The B’s ended their season with a 4-2 win away to Mungret Regional with the goals coming from Kalem Harte 2, Ger O’Brien & Tristan O’Sullivan. Overall a very decent season for the lads, although they will have been disappointed not to have been promoted but a third place league finish and a Cup win can be regarded as a very successful season.
The C’s lost their final game of the season, 4-2 at home to Cappamore with goals from JC Ahern and Ciaran Braddick. This is a very young team who will now play in Div 4 next season. However this season will stand to the younger players, who will now push hard for promotion back up to 3B next season.
The U18s are still in with a big shout for the league title following a 1-1 draw at home to Charleville with James Rochford scoring a late equaliser and then following this up with a 6-0 win away to Corbally with goals from Nathan Hartigan 2, Darren Collins 2, James Rochford & Adam Hurley. If the lads beat Shelbourne on Tuesday evening, they will then play Charleville in a league play-off on Sunday, May 27 at 6.30pm at a venue to be decided.
Congratulation to the U16 Schoolboys, under the management of Ray Ryan & Daire Kennedy, who secured the LDSL Div 1 League & Cup double after beating a gallant Aisling Annacotty B side 3-2 in the final in U.L. The lads had to dig deep to win the cup after going 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes. Karl Kelly pulled one back in the 22nd minute and it was 1-2 at half-time. A much improved performance after the break saw Newport dominate the second half and Jack O’Carroll brought the sides level 7 minutes after the interval. A wonder strike from Karl Kelly from 25 yards out with 4 minutes left on the clock ensured that Newport secured a historic double and went through the domestic league & cup season unbeaten. Well done lads on a great achievement. A great way to end your time as schoolboy players before moving into the junior ranks.
The U15A side ended their season a high after beating Janesboro 3-2 away with goals from Eoin McLoughlin 2 & Jay Ryan. A strong finish to their league campaign, winning their final three games, saw the lads finish in a highly respectable 4th place in the Premier League.
The U13A recorded an excellent 4-0 win away to Carew Park with goals from Alex O’Toole 2 & Conor Brett 2. The lads now have just two league games remaining, away to Regional this Wednesday and the final game provisionally scheduled for Friday, June 1 at home to Caherdavin.
The U13B side had a mixed week, drawing 1-1 with Corbally with Michael Carroll on the mark and then losing away to league winners Granville, with the only highlight being Nathan Bridgeman scoring a hat-trick. They just have one game remaining, home to Regional on Monday, May 21.
The U7, 8 & 9 sides all finish their season in the coming week. U7s are away to Limerick FC next Saturday (9.45am), U8s are home to Aisling Annacotty on Monday, May 28 (7pm) and the U9s are away to Lisnagry on Wednesday, May 30 (7pm).
Hard luck to our U14 girls who lost the NTSFL League playoff 4-0 to Killavilla in front of a large crowd in Brickfields Nenagh. Having lost the cup final just a few days earlier the girls were hoping to finish the season as league winners. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Killavilla proved to be the better team on the night. Overall it was a very good season for the girls, cup-finalists and league runners-up is something to build on for next season. Just a case of so close but yet so far.
This game was the final schoolgirl game of the season and the players and coaches can now take a well-earned summer break before the new season resumes in August. Thanks to all the players, coaches, parents and officials for ensuring the continued growth of schoolgirl football in Newport.
