Derryleigh Diary – November 3 2018

None of our junior sides were in action last weekend as it was a free day for all junior soccer nationally due to the FAI Cup Final taking place in the Aviva Stadium. However next Sunday is a big one for the club as we are one win away from getting through to the out-of-town stages in the FAI Junior Cup for the first time in the club’s 48 year existence. Granville Rangers are the team that stands in our way and we face them in Glenbrook next Sunday morning at 11am. Marc Barry will have his squad well-up for the game and will leave no stone unturned in the preparations. We hope to see a large Newport crowd make the short journey to the Childers Road venue to support the lads.

The U18 Youths are also in action in Round 2 of the FAI Youths Cup, when they welcome Aisling Annacotty to Derryleigh Park at 2.15pm. The lads couldn’t have a tougher task as Aisling are currently the top Youth team in the Limerick Leagues. However in cup football, anything can happen and if the team can play to their full ability on the day, it could make for a very exciting cup tie.

The C team travel to Herbertstown in the first round of the Open Cup. This will be a tough game as Herbertstown currently top Div 3B, the division above Newport. Kick off is 2.15pm with the winners away to Castle Utd in Round 2.

The B team are in league action when they travel to play Athlunkard Villa on Sunday morning at 11am. This is the start of the second half of the league and the Bs will be looking for a win to improve on their current fourth place league position.

None of our competitive schoolboy sides were in action last weekend. The U13A side were very disappointed to have made the journey to Bridgetown only to find out that the game was called off. The U7 games were called off by the league due to the poor weather, therefore only our U11 sides were in action with one away to Aisling and the other at home to Regional. These were the last games for the U11s before the winter break ahead of the new Calendar Football season commencing in February. Both sides have come on leaps & bounds since the start of the season and this was clearly on display with their excellent performances on Saturday.

Next Saturday sees the evens age groups in action. The two U8 sides are in action. Group 1 away to Regional and Group 3 at home to Aisling Annacotty, both at 9.45am. The two U10 sides are at home to Aisling Annacotty & Corbally (11am). U12A side are away to Regional (11am). U14B are away to Aisling (11am). Both U16 sides are at home, with the As playing Fairview and the Bs playing Aisling Annacotty C, with the games kicking off at 12.30pm.

The U12, U14 and U16 sides were in action. Hard luck to our U16 schoolgirls who bowed out of the National Cup when they came up against a very strong Cashel side, who were on top of their game. Best of luck to Cashel for the rest of the competition.

The U14s played out a very exciting and hard-fought 0-0 draw with Holycross. This was definitely not a boring goalless draw with both sides very evenly-matched and providing a very entertaining game for both sets of supporters.

The U12s made the away journey to play Knigh Utd and came away with all 3 points courtesy of a goal from Aoibhinn McNamara.

Next Saturday, sees a massive game for the U18 girls when they welcome Askeaton to Derryleigh Park in the FAI National Cup Quarter Final with a 2pm kick-off. This is the first time that any side from Newport has reached the quarter-final stage of a National Cup competition so we hope to see a big home crowd in attendance to get behind Terri Butler’s side. The U13 girls are home to Borrisokane (10am) and the U15s are home to Knigh Utd (11.30am).

Well done to the following girls from Newport who have been selected on the NTSFL U13 Girls Academy. Sinead O’Riordan, Aoife Mellerick, Isobel Eivers, Laura Parsons, Lauren Bailey & Heather O’Neill. Congrats girls on the great achievement. Well done also to our player, Abbie Lenihan, who was part of the Munster U15 girls squad, that defeated Cork City 3-1 over the weekend, with Abbie scoring one of the goals. Well done Abbie. Keeping the NTAFC flag flying high.

Pop-Up Shop (Extra Collection Dates)
Newport’s very own Mrs. Brown (aka Breda Lenihan) and the Social Committee are running a Pop-Up Shop in Derryleigh Park next Saturday, November 10 from 10.00am to 2.30pm. Due to requests, we have added another 2 collection dates for people to donate items in good saleable condition. Please drop to Derryleigh Park Clubhouse upstairs between 6.30 to 8.00pm on Wed, Nov 7 & Fri, Nov 9. We would also really appreciate any Home-Bakes on the day. Don’t forget to drop into the pop-up-shop next Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm to grab a bargain and meet Mrs. Brown. Your support on the day would be much appreciated also. Be sure to get there early to pick-up the best bargains. All proceeds will go to the Soccer Club. Any queries, please contact Breda Lenihan on 085 1428735.

Bag Packing Thank You
Thank you to all our volunteers who generously gave up their precious time to help the club’s bag packing fundraiser last Friday. It is truly appreciated. Thanks also to the generous shoppers in Dunnes Stores for being so generous and to the staff & management there for being so welcoming & helpful. Special thanks to our incredible Social Committee who drove this on with their hard work and enthusiasm. Well done to Daniel Egan, Marie O’Mahony & Deirdre Moloney who were winners of the small ‘thank-you’ raffle held for the volunteers.

Calorie Kickers
By popular demand we are delighted that our Calorie Kickers will continue until mid December. There is still time to lose a stone if you start making some changes right now. If you are trying to lose weight and are able to stay focused by yourself – that’s great, well done! However if you succeed better with a weekly weighing by another person why not come to Newport Town AFC Clubhouse on Wednesday evenings between 6.45 and 7.45pm. Cost is €5 joining fee and €3 a week weigh in.

Last Man Standing
Just 3 players remained from the original 167 entrants as we entered Round 11 last weekend. After the games, we still have no winner of Last Man Standing. Denise O’Sullivan (Leicester) was looking good with 7 minutes to go but two late West Ham goals brought big sighs of relief from Finn Chambers & Robbie Bailey. All 3 now move onto round 12 next weekend.

Club Gear
We will begin taking Xmas orders this week for club gear. The brochure and order forms are available on the club website as well as from team managers, committee members or in the Derryleigh Dugout. Call to the clubhouse on Thursday evening from 7-8pm to place your order.

Entry to FAI National Draw is closing
Can ALL tickets for the FAI National Draw (sold or unsold) please be returned along with payment to Tom O’Malley or any Committee member by this coming Thursday, Nov 8 at the very latest. If you would like to purchase a ticket, please contact Tom on 086 1927026. The local club draw for 2 Irish International Tickets will take place next weekend. Thanks for your support.

There was no winner of the club’s lotto on Saturday, November 3 and this week’s jackpot is €4,750 with the next draw taking place on Saturday, November 10 in McGrath’s. The numbers drawn were 4, 10, 14 & 25. Thanks as always to everyone who supports the club’s main fund raiser.
