Sunday, March 3 2019 (Derryleigh Park)
Scorers: Brian O’Sullivan 3 & Paul Ryan
Despite the awful weather on Sunday, the Junior A game against Granville in the Div 1B Calvert Cup went ahead in Derryleigh Park. Newport advanced to the quarter-final following a comfortable 4-0 win with a goal from Paul Ryan and captain, Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan scoring the other 3 goals to make it two hat-tricks in consecutive games and bring his season’s tally to 21 and according to one of the club statiticians, he also scored his 175th junior goal for Newport, which is some achievement.
Newport dominated the game from start to finish and after Clemy opened the scoring in the 11th minute it always looked like the home side were in complete control and in truth, if we had been more clinical in front of goal the winning margin could have been more.
It was good to see James Lynch make a welcome return to the matchday squad following a lengthy absence through injury. The most welcome sound of the day was the ref’s final whistle to allow the players & hardy supporters escape from the weather. Newport will now be home to Regional Utd B in the quarter-final.
Next Sunday, the A’s are away to Hill Celtic in the quarter-final of the Lawson Cup. The winner will play the winners of Pike Rovers & Prospect in the semi-final. Hill Celtic are also in Div 1B and lie one place ahead of us in second place. Newport won the only game between the sides so far this season but Hill Celtic are on a very good run of form. There’s very little between both sides, so this game could potentially go all the way to penalties. Kick-off in Hogan Park at 11am.
Match Squad: Harry Ryan, Kevin O’Brien, Mark McGuire, Elliott Slattery, Christy O’Connor, Peter O’Sullivan, Paul Ryan, Sean Ryan, Brian O’Sullivan (C), Davy Ryan, Dave Kennedy, James Lynch & Jimmy Fyfe
