Junior A, Div 1B Cup, Newport Town AFC 6-0 Regional Utd B

Sunday, March 31 2019 (Deryleigh Park)

Scorers: Jimmy Fyfe, Mark McGuire, Christy O’Connor, Paul Ryan, Brian O’Sullivan & Darren Collins

The A team welcomed a youthful Regional Utd B side to Derryleigh Park in the Div 1B Cup on a glorious spring day and ran out comfortable winners on a 6-0 scoreline with goals coming from six different scorers, Jimmy Fyfe, Mark McGuire, Christy O’Connor, Paul Ryan, Brian O’Sullivan & Darren Collins. Newport will now meet Knockainey away in the semi-final, after they defeated league leaders, Kilfrush, on penalties.

Newport opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Jimmy Fyfe headed home from a corner and when Mark McGuire latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box on the 20th minute and fired home to make it 2-0, Newport appeared to be well in control of the game. Centre-half Christy O’Connor headed powerfully home from a corner on the half-hour mark to extend the Newport lead and a Paul Ryan strike on the stroke of half-time after some good work by Brian O’Sullivan, made it 4-0 to the home side at the interval.

The second half continued in the same vein with Newport controlling the game and creating plenty of chances. Brian O’Sullivan scored his 22nd goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 71st minute after Paul Ryan was taken down in the box. Darren Collins completed the scoring with 7 minutes remaining on the clock when his shot was fumbled by the Regional keeper into his own net. A satisfying aspect of this game was that it was the third clean-sheet in the last 4 games. The A’s still have 7 league games remaining and a cup semi-final to look forward to but this means that they are going to face a very congested fixture schedule in the coming weeks and the depth of Marc Barry’s squad is going to be fully tested in the run-in. However the focus will continue to be one game at a time and hope that players remain free from injury and suspension.

Match Squad: Harry Ryan, Kevin O’Brien, Mark McGuire, Elliott Slattery, Christy O’Connor, Darren Collins, Davy Ryan, Jimmy Fyfe, Paul Ryan, Brian O’Sullivan, Jack Noble, Sean Ryan, James Lynch, Dave Kennedy & Peter O’Sullivan.
