Scorers: Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan 2, Christy O’Connor, Elliott Slattery, James Lynch & Nathan Hartigan
The A team maintained their excellent run of form, with a solid 6-0 defeat of Geraldines B on Sunday afternoon in Derryleigh Park. The win, moved Newport to the top of Div 1B on 22 points after 9 games, one point ahead of second placed Kilfrush and two ahead of third placed Geraldines B. Prior to the game, the visitors had an unbeaten record but on the day they came up against a determined Newport side who commanded the game throughout. Christy O’Connor opened the scoring with a strong header from a corner swung in by Kalem Harte in the 10th minute. Just 2 minutes later, Geraldines had a great chance to equalise but their player blasted over from close range. Newport extended their lead in the 13th minute when Elliott Slattery fired home a super free-kick, which gave the keeper no chance. Newport dominated the first half and had good chances from Mark McGuire, who saw his shot go just wide after a scintilating run and on the stroke of half-time, Kalem Harte will feel that he should have scored when his shot was fired over the bar after getting on the end of a good cross from Captain, Brian O’Sullivan. 2-0 up at half-time and in truth, the lead should have been more.
On the hour mark, James Lynch was in the right place at the right home to fire home, when Brian O’Sullivan’s shot was only parried by the Geraldine’s keeper. The captain finally got on the score-sheet in the 75th minute when he calmly converted a penalty. He then doubled his tally in the 82nd minute when he coolly chipped the keeper to give Newport a 5-0 lead. The captain has found his goal-scoring form after a hat-trick last week and a brace today. The scoring was wrapped up in the final minute when substitute, Nathan Hartigan, fresh from scoring 2 goals for the B team in the morning game was able to walk the ball into the net unopposed. A 6-0 win, good team performance, a strong clean-sheet and all 3 points to move them to top of the league. Job done and a good day’s work. 11 games played in all competitions to date with 9 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat. Team Manager, Marc Barry can be very content with the good start to the season but he will know that there are lots of challenges ahead and complacency will not be allowed under any circumstance. The squad is a good blend of youth & experience, playing a nice brand of football fully deserving of support and it would be great to see large crowds in Derryleigh to get behind the lads in the coming games. Next up is the tough task of an away game to Premier outfit, Geraldines A, in the second round of the Munster Junior Cup next Sunday at 10.30am in Garryowen.
