Junior A, Div 1B, Newport Town AFC 7-0 Caherdavin

Thursday, April 11 2019 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Brian O’Sullivan 3, Christy Doyle 3 & Paul Ryan

The A’s maintained their promotion challenge with a comfortable 7-0 win at home to a very young Caherdavin side last Thursday in the first of their midweek games. The Newport squad also contained a number of young players including three of this year’s Youth squad along with a few more from last year’s Youth squad. Seeing the younger players breaking through to our junior squads in the past couple of seasons is a great reflection of the good work being done in our schoolboy section.

Newport completely dominated the first half and had numerous chances with Christy Doyle being denied by the woodwork on at least two occasions. We finally broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when Paul Ryan headed home a cross from Peter O’Sullivan out on the left side. Christy Doyle scored goals in the 31st & 35th minute to extend the lead.

Newport took a 3-0 lead into the half-time break and any fears of a Caherdavin comeback were nipped in the bud early in the second half when Brian O’Sullivan slotted home a spot-kick after Newport were awarded a penalty for a handball. Doyler scored one more in the 80th minute to secure his hat-trick. Not to be outdone by his strike partner, Clemy scored again in the 59th & 81st minute to get his hat-trick.

Christy Doyle, made his welcome return after an injury layout and showed no signs of rustiness when scoring a hat-trick on his comeback. The Doyle / O’Sullivan combination have amassed a total of 62 goals betweeen them this season, which makes them one of the top scoring partnerships in all the Limerick Leagues.

With just 5 league games remaining, Newport are still right in the promotion hunt. We are 9 points behind league leaders, Kilfrush with 2 games in hand and 3 behind second-placed Hill Celtic with a game in hand and still have to play the top two in Derryleigh Park and they still have to play each other, so there’s still lots of tense & exciting times ahead in the remaining games.

Match Squad: Harry Ryan, James Lynch, Mark McGuire, Christy O’Connor, Jimmy Fyfe, Peter O’Sullivan, Paul Ryan, Darren Collins, Jack Noble, Brian O’Sullivan (C), Christy Doyle, Nathan Hartigan, Davy Ryan & Colin Coleman
