Junior A, Lawson Cup, Rd 2, Newport Town AFC 6-1 Kilmallock

Sunday, January 20 2019 (Derryleigh Park)

Scorers: Sean Ryan 3, Paul Ryan, Christy O’Connor & Davy Ryan

The A team bounced back from the disappointing defeat in the FAI Junior Cup last week, to take the scalp of Premier League side, Kilmallock, with an emphatic home 6-1 win the round 2 of the Lawson Cup, thanks to a hat-trick from Sean Ryan and goals from Paul Ryan, Davy Ryan and one from Christy O’Connor to break-up the Ryan monopoly on goals. Newport will now be at home to Div 2A leaders, Hyde Rangers, in the next round.

Newport took the lead in the 4th minute, when Sean Ryan calmly slotted home after a lovely through ball from Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan. Both sides nullified each other in the first half but both keepers, including Newport’s Harry Ryan, dealt comfortably with any threats that came their way. Newport were living with the Premier side and didn’t look like a team that are 2 divisions below. 1-0 up at half-time and it was anyone’s game.

Newport extended the lead 2 minutes into the second half, when Clemy was once again the provider. His perfect chip cross to the far post was expertly headed home by Paul Ryan, who was playing just his second game for the club on his return from his 12 month travels. Kilmallock reduced the lead to 2-1 when a well-struck free kick gave Harry Ryan no chance low to his right.

The visitors had a good shout for a penalty turned down by the ref and not long after Newport were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately the Kilmallock keeper made a great save to deny Clemy when pushing the ball around the post for a corner. However from the resultant corner in the 70th minute, Christy O’Connor was in the right place in the penalty area to rifle the ball home to extend the Newport lead to 3-1.

The visitors now had to chase the game and Newport began exploiting the spaces that were now appearing in the Kilmallock defence. Newport made the game safe in the 75th minute when Davy Ryan showed all his experience to coolly round the keeper after picking up a pass on the edge of the box to make it 4-1. Two more goals from Sean Ryan in the 83rd & 86th minute, to secure his hat-trick, ensured Newport’s safe passage to the third round. Newport were expected to put it up to the Premier side but the emphatic score-line would have been far beyond most people’s expectations.

The A team players & management would like to thank Barry Windows for their kind sponsorship of the new jerseys, which were worn for the first time in this game.
