Scorers: Colin Coleman & O.G.
A very young B side, sprinkled with some experienced players, were very unlucky not to take a deserved point from this game, however Mungret managed to snatch all 3 points on offer, after Newport conceded a penalty with just 4 minutes left on the clock. Newport opened the scoring through the tireless Colin Coleman very early in the first half, but this was cancelled out when Mungret were awarded a contentious penalty for hand ball midway through the first half. There has been a lot of debate about hand balls already this season and hopefully it doesn’t become a regular talking point. Newport took the lead again in the second half when a free kick was headed to his own net by a Mungret player. Newport were playing well at this stage but Mungret rallied well and scored when a ball over the top left the Mungret player one-on-one with Brendan Coffey in the Newport goal and he calmly tucked it away. Both sides only had half-chances as the game neared its conclusion and it looked like the points would be shared until the home side were awarded the penalty to win the game. It was a disappointing way to lose the game, but this is a young side with lots of talented players and it’s a steep learning curve, playing in a division up from last year. This squad will continue to improve as the season progresses and they will be anxious to turn things around when they welcome Caherdavin to Derryleigh next Tuesday evening.
