Saturday, February 21 (Derryleigh Park)
Our under 16’s were at home on Saturday to play bottom of the table Mungret Regional. Newport Town came into this game flying high after an amazing win over Shannon town in their last outing.
Newport got off to a flying start with a well worked play down the centre with Conor Nolan splitting the Mungret defence with a through ball over the top, which Ben Cusack, in his new position up front with Aaron O’Neil and on the second bounce volleyed the ball home for Newport town.
Even though Newport dominated the 1st half they were unable to capitalise on their lead.
In the 2nd half, Newport town were awarded a free kick for a foul on Ben Cusack just outside Mungret’s box. Aaron O Neill took the responsibility for taking the free (no Balotelli moment here). Aaron drove the ball up over the wall and the Mungret keeper had to be at his very best to stop Newport from going two up by getting his fingers under the ball and pushing it over the bar. The corner kick, resulting from the free kick was whipped in by Nathan Hartigan. Man of the match, Elliott Slattery, rose highest and headed it just wide. Elliott, at the heart of our defence was both calm and collected every time he got on the ball and distributed some superb passes to push us forward.
For the remainder of the 2nd half both Newport town and Mungret created very little chances.
Overall a good 3 points as Newport Town go into their last game of the season which sees Newport on 18 points, putting us solely in 3rd position and the cup still to come.
Cyril & Chris would like to thanks the guys once again. Training Monday evening 8-9 and full attendance is requested please.
