Scorer: Paul Ryan 3
For the second week running, Newport scored three and kept a clean sheet to advance to the next round of the Munster Junior Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over fellow Premier A side, Hill Celtic in Derryleigh Park on Sunday morning. Newport will be away to Charleville in the next round after they beat Moyross 4-2.
Newport played well in the first half and dominated the opening 45 minutes and deservedly took a 2-0 lead into the break, courtesy of goals from Paul Ryan in the 17th & 19th minutes. The first was a good header from a cross from the left by Jimmy Fyfe. The second followed less than 2 minutes later when he was played through and found himself one-on-one with the keeper and placed a low shot past the keeper. Newport were good value for this lead and in truth, could easily have had another couple if we had been a bit more clinical in front of goals.
Having played Hill Celtic numerous times over the past 12 months, we know that they would come back into the game and the second half was a much tighter affair with the visitors dominating long passages of play. However a good defensive effort by Newport frustrated the city side and it was good to secure another clean sheet. Newport made the game safe in the 81st minute when that man again, Paul Ryan, latched onto a defensive error and calmly slotted home to grab his hat-trick. A good win and we now look forward to the visit to North Cork.
