On Saturday 16th May, Newport U9’s ‘1’ played a blitz in Carew Park against the host club, Caherdavin and Shannon Town. A very enjoyable morning was had by all. Newport played a very strong Caherdavin team in the first game and despite putting in a great second half effort came out on the losing side. Carew Park were our opponent’s in the second game wh ich was a closer fought affair but again a strong Carew Park team came out on top. The last game was against Shannon Town and it was here Newport saved the best till last. A great first half performance saw Paddy Hussey start the scoring followed by a brace from Adam Power. Against the wind in the second half Shannon put pressure on Newport but Luke Kennedy in goals and Joe Crowley and Dillon Jones in the backs put in a sterling performance. The team drove on from here with Adam Power completing his hat trick followed by great goals from Darragh Meaney and Paddy Hussey. Stephen Ryan and Zack Ryan worked tirelessly in what was the best display from this team this year.
On Saturday May 16th, our U9 ‘2’ consisting of Damien O’Brien, David O’Brien, Evan Keogh, James Delahunty, Owen Grant, Colm Goodwin Boer, Evan Moran and Conor Mulamphy headed to Shelbourne park to play a blitz against Ballynanty, Janesboro and Mungret. Newport played a very strong Ballynanty team in the first game and were loosing 3 goals to 1 (by David O’Brien) by half time. But by the end of the second half after James Delahunty made some brilliant saves and David O’Brien scored 2 more goals, Newport almost had it won when Ballynanty got a goal in the last 2 mins of the game to win it 4 goals to 3.
Our second match was against Janesboro. Newport took the lead from the very beginning with Evan Moran and Conor Mulamphy scoring and giving us a lead of 2 goals to 1 at half time. After some great saves by Evan Keogh and some great clearances by Damien O’Brien and Colm Goodwin Boer, Evan Moran got a goal in the last few minutes of the game to give us an overall win of 3 goals to 1. Our third match was against Mungret. All our players were exhausted at this stage after 2 tough matches but they still continued to drive on. By half time Newport were in the lead 2 goals to 1, scored by Conor Mulamphy and David O’Brien and some great saves made by Damien O’Brien with the help of Evan Keogh in the backs. The team drove on from here with a brilliant performance from Owen Grant scoring the final 2 goals of the match to give them an overall score of 4 goals to 2. Everyone went home exhausted but smiling and a great day was had by all. Well done to everyone. Thanks to the parents for all your support.
