The Derryleigh Diary – Week 50 2014

The soccer club would like to wish everyone in the Newport area, especially our players, coaches, supporters, sponsors and their families a very peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

Due to last week’s bad weather all Junior and Schoolboy/girl games under the auspices of the Limerick Leagues were cancelled. All leagues are now on a break over the Christmas period, with schoolboy/girl football due to resume on January 3 and the following day the juniors will travel to Wembley Rovers in the first round of the Lawson Cup.

On Sunday, December 7, Newport A’s kept up their recent run of good results with a comprehensive 6-1 victory away to Cappamore Celtic in Div 1A of the Limerick District League, with the goals coming from Brian ‘Clemy’ O’Sullivan, with a hat-trick, Paul Ryan, Brian Cosgrove & Ross Dunne. This win maintains our fourth place in the league and keeps us right in the promotion battle. After eleven games, Newport currently stand in fourth place with 23 points from 7 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats.

Our B’s took on Murroe in a local derby. Nothing could separate the sides and the honours were shared in a 0-0 draw, with both teams taking a point from the game.

In Schoolboy soccer, both our under 12 & 16 teams are in good form and both had fine victories. Our U12’s made it six wins from six games with a 4-2 away Aisling Annacotty with the goals coming from Johnny Ryan with a hat-trick & Sean McNamara.

Following on from their recent victory over Janesboro, our under 16’s travelled to Caherdavin Celtic and recorded an excellent 5-2 victory with the goals supplied by Nathan Hartigan with a hat-trick and Aaron O’Neill with a brace. The win solidifies Newport’s position in the top half of the table.

Our under 7’s have now played their final Futsal blitz of 2014. This group of young players have come on in leaps and bounds in the past couple of months and have had some great fun along the way.

Our Xmas Draw takes place in Sullivan’s on Sunday, Dec 21 and everyone is invited to come along to this enjoyable evening. Three large Xmas hampers and a fuel hamper are the prizes on offer. Entry to the raffle is only  2 per line, which can be bought from players, managers, coommittee members or in various local businesses.

Our Table Quiz was held in Lee’s on Friday, December 5 and a great night was had by all.

Happy Christmas!
