U17 Girls, Lough Derg 2-6 Newport Town AFC

Saturday, January 12 2019 (Clarisford Park)

Scorers: Kaitlyn Bradshaw 2, Abbie Lenihan, Chelsea King, Caragh Flynn & Rachel Carey

Newport u17 girls traveled to Clarisford Park this Saturday to meet Lough Derg in their first league match of 2019.
This is a very competitive league and there are no easy matches. The girls knew they would have to work for the win and set about the task with great determination.

Early in the half Abbie Lenihan opened the scoring with a great close range effort beating the keeper. Roisin Power was in top form on the right wing with a number of great runs and very intelligent passes to ensure that the supply to our forwards was constant and accurate. Similarly Hollie Coleman made an impact on the left wing and looked dangerous whenever she touched the ball. Mids and forwards Abbie, Chelsea King, Anzelika Lepika, Rachel Carey and Kaitlyn Bradshaw settled into their rhythm quickly with some great interplay that led to 2 great opportunities for Kaitlyn who took her chances and scored twice. Midway through the half, Lough Derg scored against the run of play but our keeper Emma Moloney and backs Kate Harvey, Eimear Carey and Sarah Finn made sure that they were held out for the rest of the half. Just before the break, a Newport player was brought down in the box, Chelsea stepped up to take the penalty and added to the tally. HT 1 – 4.
Some settling words from Captain Sarah at half time set up the second half well. With fresh legs coming on throughout the match Amber Deegan, Leah Moran , Jenny Keppel , Carragh Flynn, Leona Burke and Ava Shinners were keen to contribute and got stuck in straight away. Early in the half Carragh received a ball in the box with about 3 defenders closing her down, she managed to break through and squeeze the ball past the keeper. Lough Derg never gave up and their determination was rewarded with another goal. A final bit of brilliance from Rachel sealed the deal when she broke up the right, met a wall of defenders at the edge of the box, took a shot from 25m out straight into the top left corner, definitely a contender for goal of the season. FT 2 – 6

A very balanced performance from the girls and a great way to start the year. We are particularly proud of the girls attitude and composure today, they consistently do our club and our community proud. A great group of girls!
