U17 Girls, Newport Town AFC 0-1 BT Harps

Saturday, September 8 2018 (Derryleigh Park)

On Saturday, our U17 girls started their season campaign with great spirit but unfortunately fell slightly short in their first outing against BT Harps.

The first half was an incredibly competitive affair with nothing between the teams. Newport showed some great promise, attacking and defending with determination and enthusiasm. A number of shots on target were met by the BT keeper and additionally the Newport girls were denied by the crossbar and uprights a few times. Towards the end of the first half, BT scored. HT 0-1.

The second half was an even tighter encounter with BT increasing their defensive efforts. As was the case in the first half, Newport had some very positive passages of attacking play but could not convert them to goals. FT 0-1.

This was a brave and spirited effort by the Newport girls considering that this year they have jumped from U15 to an U17 league. They were competitive and showed exceptional character to stay in the fight. We look forward to seeing them progress as they take on this challenge for the remainder of the season.

A special mention for Anzelika Lepika who made her debut for Newport, slotting in seamlessly making a huge contribution to the game. We would also like to wish our team mate Chelsea King a speedy recovery from the injury she obtained in a road traffic accident last week.
